860 Help Needed

I have a Ford 860 tractor that has been acting up and I can't figure it out.
When the tractor is cold it will start up and run with out a problem. However after an hour or so of use it will bog down and the motor will start to hunt. I can get it to run smoothly by adjusting the fuel mixture screw on the carb but it will only run smoothly for 10-15 minutes before it all starts again. If I adjust the carb again it will run well for another 10-15 minutes and then the cycle repeats. It seems that in most cases I adjust the carb to a richter mixture to get it to smooth out but not always.

I have re built the carb but no change.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

sounds to me like you may have a restriction in the fuel tank or dirty screen in the fuel inlet.whn you stop the tractor to adjust the carb the fuel usage is reduced and gives time for fuel level to catch up.it may also be time for a new set of points and condenser.

I thought of that as well and replaced the fuel line and screen. I am making the carb adjustments with the tractor running if that matters. I'll try the points and condenser. I know it has been a while since I changed them.
Thanks for the reply.

Don't know if this is the screen you replaced, but there is a fine screen inside the tank attached to the shut off valve. There is another screen at the sediment bowl, and some carbs had a small screen at the carb. Sometimes the sloshing around of the fuel in the tank during operation stirs up the crud and clogs the screen, then when it's not running the crud settles. Have you checked the inside of the tank for dirt and rust? Hope this helps.

really does sound like classic fuel restriction... the hunting especially.

i bet choke helps it too.

I replaced the screen in the bowl as well as the entire shut-off valve unit under the tank. There is no screen or filter in the carb that I can find.

Thanks for your help

Take the hollow bolt off of the carb that secures the sediment bowl, be sure there are no build ups of crud inside that bolt and especially in the small inlet holes if so ream them and clean the interior of the bolt.

That is exactly what I thought but I can't seem to find the restriction so I was hoping there may be some other answer.

Thanks for you help
