what manual do I need to order to work on this tractor?I currently have the loader and backhoe manual.would like a detailed description of engine and transmission rebuild. And is it possible to use this tractor minus the backhoe for a pto implement such as a brush hog? there is currently just a cover over the pto area so I am sure I would need some internal shaft and bearing parts. Also the tractor has an over under Sherman transmission. any input would be appreciated...thanks.

Hey Glen, I'm in the process of adding pto and lift cover to my ford industrial; I have the IT manual and the larger ford tractor manual, both very helpfull so I would get them both. Its a great project mine is currently sitting in the garage in pieces but thats part of, it had been sitting (luckally) under cover when I found it for about 5 yrs. If I can be of any help feel free to ask. DW

New Holland publication number 40060090 covers all the four-cylinder 4000 series. You can order it direct from New Holland, although it has almost doubled in price in the past few months. They now want over $175 for it.

ok thanks DW, do you have any reference numbers for those 2 manuals?Does your tractor have the sherman transmission?

Hey there Glen, yep mine has the Sherman trans. on it. I got the IT manual at Tractor supply store and on the back it will tell what series tractor's thats covered $32.00 If I remember, the other Ford Service Manual I've had for years but they are listed on E Bay as I write this to you, the front cover lists 600 thru the 4000 series and also has a bonus for the Select o speed trans. you should be able to get one for around $30.00-$40.00 they are both worth every penny. both books cover the industrial tractor, I cant give you any book numbers they are in Fl. while I'm in Ga. on a job, I'll be going home sat. night and can get the #'s for you if you want. Any help I can give just ask, good to hear of someone doing the same project I am, DW

Ps.. I got alot of info from the CNH web site very good pix's, you'll need them cause your tractor is missing quite a few parts but dont let that bother you they are all over E Bay or craiglist and I'm sure many more that other folks could name.

I have the same manual as Mark B above. Over 400 pages. very good
#40060090 from new holland / ford
I have a '63 heavy duty industrial 4140 with 723 backhoe and a loader. Runs great!! Used it today for the first time after sitting all winter. Fired right up and dug out a ditch and piled some topsoil to dry

yeah Tom...went to newholland site...it isn't cheap..could bid on fleabay but I don't really have a need for the SOS info that usually comes with it. The picture I posted is the current manual I have. Not much is mentioned about the 4000 series...although some one has told me it is practically the same tractor.Manual has 422 pgs.....copyright is 1961. So I can't really see a reference to a '63 if the manual was printed in '61.

Glen, the current manual probably won't have much more information than the one you have. The big difference is the updated SOS section which includes a lot of color diagrams. Differences between the 801 series tractors and the four-cylinder 4000 series are mostly cosmetic.

You might keep your eye on eBay in case a newer manual comes up for sale. Also, I've noticed that New Holland seems to raise and lower their prices based on demand and availability. It could be that they are almost out of the last printing and have temporarily jacked up prices until the next printing comes in.

hank you Mark. I thumbed thru the pages last night and saw the word "industrial"show up.The only thing that I haven't figured out is how the combo 4-speed & over/under sherman transmission is set up.They show separate transmissions with the cover on the top and the shift attached to the cover. My 4000 has its handle on the side of the casing.

The sherman has 3 ranges. 50% under, 1:1 and 50% over. You move the lever forward and back to switch between 50% over and 50% under. To get to the 1:1 range, you need to go to the center (Neutral) and pull the lever OUT away from the transmission case 1 inch, then go down with it still OUT. That procedure is why many don't find that range.

The "Hot Tip" is to NEVER (ever!) shift the sherman when the tractor is moving as they don't like it at all.

ok John_bud I understand that shifting pattern....but does it come off the tractor as a whole assembly with the 4-speed or is it mounted on the inside separately? I am going to split the tractor and would like to service both transmissions while the tractor is apart.

I am just now putting my 4000 industrial back together. and i can tell you it is a real bear.My sherman is a forward rev. not high low.that would have been nice.If you are going to split it drop the loader and back hoe dont try to go around them like i did. It can be down with jacks over head hoist and jack stand but i never do it again.

I never take my tractor on the road, only on my 50 acres. My sherman is always in LOW RANGE. It's all I need. Crossing fields and such, I use 3rd gear. Just moving around where I'm working, I use first and second. IMO, fourth gear in low range is a little too fast for me. Like John said....
NEVER shift the Sherman when moving. Just what I do.

The sherman unit is about 70 pounds and is in place of the input shaft in the bell housing of the transmission. You need to split the tractor at the engine to remove it as it is a physical part of the transmission assembly. The main cluster gear will drop when you pull the sherman out. There are 4 bolts that hold the sherman and (I think??) that you need to also unbolt the counter shaft front mount before it will come out. Been a while... There is also a shim pack behind the sherman mount. You MUST set the preload by using the shim packs. Naturally, all of this makes more sense when you have the transmission out and can SEE it.

hank you John_bud...that"s the answer I was looking for.I can't seem to find anything about that in my manual.

got any pics send them to me if you can, my e-mail address is [email protected]

I've removed the 723 hoe from tractors running and not running. It is easier running, but not a big deal if not running. You just have to drag the machine to the final resting spot of the hoe, place 3/4 plywood under the box and bucket to hold the weight and not sink into the ground. Then use a floor jack to pick up the box portion of the hoe and set it onto some STOUT jack stands. I use two 6 ton stands at the box back and one at the front to keep it from tipping. You may need to pull the boom down and the dipper stick out so they make a 45 degree angle to the ground for stability.
