Ford 4000; number 1 cyl.?

Just bought a 4000 with the 4cyl. It is set up 180 degrees off as compared to my uncles tractor. Mine appears to be using rear most cyl. as #1. I know it works and my neighbor who is a heavy equip. mech. says that mine is wrong but it won't hurt (I don't do heavy work with it). The book talks of timing to #1, but I cannot find any picture or direct reference to the front cyl. being #1. While I trust this guy with my life, I just thought it would be nice to see it referenced to help out some poor guy that does not have such a great neighbor. Anyone have a reference? Thanks!

#1 is the cylinder closes to the radiator. That holds true on about 99% of all in line engines.

Thanks. Seems it would have been simple for the manufacturer to make a statement or put in a simple drawing just as the auto manufacturers do.

I would like to play the "DELL"vil's advocate here."sparkies" don't care where they start from as long as they get to the right plug at the right time. Since your neighbor is more concerned about "looks" rather than about "works",I suggest that HE turn your distibuter shaft 180 degrees and the "sparkie" wires the same, and everybody would be happy. This is assuming the distributor itself is in the normal position.(oiler at about 4:00) Fellas, I just couldn't resist this! LOL

Hay Old, I see your back. Did you get lost in the snow this winter?

Easy Wayne,
Sorry if I left you with the wrong idea about the neighbor. I was the one questioning after years of assuming and HE was just trying to let me know to just quit worrying about it. 'I' probably should change it. My real point is that we have all gone this way for ever and even if I had some mech. knowledge and the Manufacturer's book, without guys like you, the neighbor, Old, and the uncle.... the book still does NOT tell me. Thanks for helping out. Appreciate the humor.

Not 100% sure, but I THINK on the 4 cyl tractor engines is when you put the timing gears in with the dots lined up, you are NOT on the #1 compression stroke.

all you have to do is turn the motor 360 degrees and it is now timed on #1.the only thing that might be wrong would be where the wires are at in the distributor cap.dont worry about it. wont hurt anything.

This is the most helpful and greatest bunch of folks. The origional question IS, which cyl. is #1?? LOL!!! So far we have a consensus from some great minds saying (and through experience), that it is the front most cylinder.... I happen to agree and just assumed that.
Thanks gang!

(quoted from post at 19:35:53 02/24/09) If it works don't fix it.

If you have those wire lables it may be smart to put them on so you don't get confused in 5-10 years when you change wires or plugs or dist cap! That's the only down side to not "correcting" them.
