Hi guys,
I'm actually an 8n owner but i;m looking at a 1950ish ford 851 i was wondering if it has a differential lock in it and what other options does it have compared to an 8n? like live hydraulics? and what potential problems?
thanks guys

The 851 does not have a differential lock. It does have live hydraulics- the hydraulic pump is driven by the engine unlike the 8N where it is driven by the PTO shaft. The 851 does not have live PTO- that would be an 861. Power Steering was optional on the 851.
The 5 speed transmission in the 851/861 is known to jump out of gear (usually 3rd gear) when it has a lot of hours on it. It can be an inexpensive fix if it's due to worn shift detents or it can be an expensive fix if it's due to worn teeth on the shift coupler whuich requires a complete trans teardown to fix.
Overall it is an excellent tractor with lots of power in a tractor not much larger than your 8N.

851 was built beginning in 1958 and ending in 1962. It does not have a differential lock, nor live PTO. It does have live hydraulics. An 861 would have live PTO. An 871 would have a full powershift 10 speed transmission and independent live PTO. An 881 would have all an 871 has plus dual speed and ground speed PTO.

To add to what awhtx and Larry have said... other options it may of may not have include power adjust wheels, front or rear wheel weights ("pie" weights on the back), rear axle-mounted weights, remote hydraulic valve(s) and couplers, and a front bumper. If you're looking for a working tractor, it's a BIG step up from an 8N.
