Ford Jubilee stering problem

My dad was plowing snow with his old 53 Jubilee, and now he called me and said the stering wheel has about 2-3 inches of travel before the wheels start to turn and it is making a grinding noise in there. Are these stering boxes or the shafts prone to go bad?? Is it just better to find a new or rebuilt stering box, or is it usually just the bearings?? Thanks for any replies. Hopefully I can get a quick answer,, this it what he plows snow with, and it seems to snow every other day lately.

Those steering boxes are not complicated. All parts are readily available through the likes of Tisco. Worst thing on those 4 cyl Fords is removing the tin to get at it.
An I&T FO 19 manual will help you. Get one.

The most common failure is the top thrust bearing which doesn't get any lube when the gear oil leaks out of the box. If the steering wheel rises (as if it is screwing itself up out of the box) when turned to the left it is definitely the top thrust bearing.

your upper bearing is bad, i had mine do that too, its not hard to fix, parts are available right here on this site, eventualy mine dropped a bearing ball down between the steering gears which efectivly locked the steering wheel, that made it right interesting to get the tractor back to the shop, get the manuel when you order the bearing its well worth it
