Hello all,
I recently urchased a what I thought to be a 801 powermaster , but I noticed above the serial number was 860. As far as I knew if the third digit ends in 0 then it is an 800 series, I am beginning to think it is not the 801 and that someone switched the metal/decals ? I am knew to ford tractors so any info would be great..

If it has 860 stamped in the transmission then that trans came out of an 800 series. You will need to look for date codes on the engine block, the trans, the rear end, the lift cover, the rear axle housings, the carb and the radiator to tell if the mechanical parts of the tractor were all made about the same time. Do the hood and rear fenders have the script Ford embossed into them? On the 800 the hood has Ford embossed and the fenders are plain. On the 801 the hood is plain and the fenders have Ford embossed.

801 Powermaster is nothing but a decal. I can stick one on a 9N but that still doesn't make it a Powermaster.

Well putting a 801 Powermaster sticker on the hood makes it a 801 tractor about as much as puting a John Deere sticker on it would make it a John Deere.

Your trans is from a 800 and says you have a 5 speed with live PTO.

So is it a 801 or a 800........
Lets start with the easy stuff.
Does your tractor look like this 801 powermaster

or does it look like this 800 tractor.

Notice the differant front grills.

Thats just a decal and it is also a way to sell a person something that its not. Thats like some one painting an 801 blue and pawning it off as a 3000 or 4000 tractor but thats also common but not right. You have a series 800 model 861

Ditto what the others are telling you..The 850 I own, i bought from an old guy that insisted it was an 801.. even when i showed him the 8-5-0 on he trans.. he said that the model was still an 801.. etc.. whatever.. I bought it anyway.. knowing that he was an idiot.. etc..

Looks like ya got an 860.. a really great tractor.

post them date codes.. maybee you are lucky and have an 861 engine/rear end.. and the trans from an 860 and are missing the egg crate.. etc.

So John, somebody's got to play the devil's advocate here. Why does the 01 series sheet metal make it an 01 anymore than the decal does? Of course it is a tad harder to change the sheetmetal.

Old, where did you come up with that? The guy has a transmission that says 860 on it. No way he has an 861 of the 800 series. There was no such thing anyhow. Now he may have an 801 series with an 800 series transmission swapped in . . . but that's something he'll have to determine by looking at all the date codes he can find on components.

Jim;
Your trans is from a 800 but you say you have 801 sheet metal.
Now that we know you have pieces from at least 2 differant models; and not just misstaken your tractor for another model because of a sticker we can dig a little deeper.

Look at the 13 pictures of my tractor in the link I have provided. Use these pictures to find the date codes on your tractors pieces. Post your date codes and we can then tell you what day each piece was made. [b:654c4848f0]Be VERY specific when you do this.[/b:654c4848f0] If a letter looks upside down while others look right side up we need to know that. If the number/letter has a : after it we need to know where it is because this tells us in what order to read it.

OK Larry go ahead and play devil's advocate.

Now read my post again and you will see [i:654c4848f0]Lets start with the easy stuff.[/i:654c4848f0]

My thinking behind asking about the sheet metal is.............
I could take the time to explain ever possibility why he may have a 801 sticker on his tractor but it is a whole lot easier to just ask what kind of sheet metal he has.
Had his answer been 800 sheet metal we could just assume he has a 800 with the wrong sticker and saved both of us a lot of time and headache. But since he said he has 801 metal that proves he has parts off of at least 2 models. Metal from a 801 and a trans from a 800.
Now we can dig deeper knowing we are not just wasting time to find out if he has a 801 that was most likely a early SOS and has a trans swap or if he has a 800 with the wrong metal and sticker.
