860 governor

Pulled all the front-end stuff off the 860 this last weekend to start prepping for paint. I noticed the governor arm/shaft is kinda loosey-goosey in the housing. There's some in/out movement(I think the seal is gone) & it moves very freely fore & aft(which I suspect is ok)............

There was quite a bit of fresh oil around the front cover before I cleaned most of it off, but no way to tell how much was from the shaft seal. Also, it had a long-term leak coming down from the valve cover which may be the majority of it.

I don't know if this is the early(ball-type)governor or the later one, but either way I guess it'll have to come off to replace the seal. If I can find one, I'll probably install a double pulley in place of the old single...maybe add power steering at some point.

BTW, do the 800's tend to run hot? This one had no t-stat installed.

They will run hot if the radiator is partly/mostly plugged, inside or out, and I've heard they need the shroud or they can run hot. If th ecooling system is up to snuff, and your carb and timing are at least close, it shouldn't run hot. I ran a 6' flail chopper in 90+ degree heat with a 850 a couple years ago (working the snot out of it), never overheated.

hey jeff - does your 860 have a 3 or 4 bladed fan? if its a 3 blader that also may be why you are running hot - try a 4 and see if it helps -cant hurt ! good luck- bryan

Bryan...it has the 3-blade fan. I haven't worked the tractor since I got it....just drove it into the shop & started tear-down, so I don't know that it ran hot. I just assumed it must have since the owner left the t-stat out.

Why would a 860 have the hand crank ratchet on the crankshaft? There's no hole in the lower grille for a hand crank.

maybe your 860 doesnt but our 55 does ! that crank hole was in it since grandpa brought it home new accoding to my uncle- bryan

Man... can you imageing hand cranking that baby... might as well try to hand crank my 5000!.. kickback probably rip your arm off at the shoulder...

Hi Jeff;

The seal is still available through CNH or TISCO. If I remember correctly there is a bushing or roller bearing behind the seal. Hope this helps.

It looks like you have the earlier version of the timing gear cover. My I&T manual says something about that version of cover no longer being serviced. I know that you can get gaskets and seals, but not the cover anymore. What's your serial number? My 850 is 7xxx and has a similar cover.
