select-o-speed trouble

1958 901

New User
I have a 1958 ford 901 with the 10 speed sos trans. everything was working fine. I switched gears from reverse to 2nd gear heard a noise and then tractor would not move in any gear. Does anyone have any idea what may have went wrong? I"m pulling it apart next week and any helpful information would be greatly appritiated.

Did your traction disconnect become disengaged? It's located behind your left foot on the round cover with the hydraulic dip stick.

I checked that and it is engaged, the noise sounded like it came from the rear of the engine and front of the trans. fluid levels are all good and fluid looks good also. i removed trans cover to check shifter cable and adjustement and the cable looks to be in brand new condition and funtioning properly. thank you for your help.

Then it sounds like you may have stripped the splines out of the hub in your torque limiting clutch or off your input shaft. Does the PTO still turn? If not I'd bet on a TLC/Input Shaft problem.

1958 901,

When you say the tractor "will not move in any gear", is it going to nuetral or park? Did you actually test each gear?

Chris

Don't start "fixing" the transmission until you have made sure it is not the torque limiting clutch. It is a spring loaded slip clutch between the flywheel and the input shaft of the transmission. The splines on the input shaft are notrious for stripping out too. Ford had this big new idea to make the splines really small. Why????? I don't know but it was a huge mistake.

I'm not sure what your talking about. Bt it sounds like you may be right,The sound i heard did come from that area. It did sound like a gear stripping out or not meshing properly. how do i check to see if this is the problem and if it is do i need to split the tractor to repair it.
Thank You so much for your help.

Yes i did test each gear even put into each gear with the trans cover loose so i could actually see the spool valve in the trans move into gear. Also when i say i does not move it is in park not nuetral this i know for sure tryed to tow it to the garage area it was in park had to move the lever on the left side of the trans to disengage so it would move. thank you for trying to help me resolve this problem your imput is appritiated.thank you

no the pto shaft does not still spin. if this is the problem what will i need to replace the torque converter. will i be able to get one and about what will it cost.

58' 901,

Based on the diagnostic chart, I will get in line behind ahwtx and ZANE, torque limiting clutch failure. Figure 124 (page 243 in Shop Manual) shows the clutch. No idea on price but the CNH website doesn't indicate it is NLA, so it would seem they are still available. I would expect it to by very expensive through CNH though. Larry will be by soon to share his wisdom and he knows the best spots to find these parts. Here is the exploded view from the CNH website. The TLC consists of parts 43-48.

As the others have indicated, either the center will have broken out of the clutch plates or the splines will be stripped on your transmission input shaft. Likely only one way to find out.
