PTO will not engage, grinds

I was Bush hogging and the tractor started to vibrate so I stopped, disengaged the PTO and lifted the cutter, found nothing on the cutter, went to engage the PTO and it would not engage. I noticed when I tried to engage the PTO the output shaft would poke out and I heard a grinding from the tranny. I tried to engage it with the motor running and with itoff, I could pull the PTO shaft, engage the lever and stick the shaft back in and it would stay engaged(with no vibration) Once I dissengage it again it would not engage again and would grind. I removed the rearend of the tractor hoping to find something obvious, but all looks well shafts are straight and splines are clean and straight. I did notice after removing the coupling sleeve that the front shaft in the tranny has about 1/2 inch play in/out. Is that normal? I would rather not remove the tranny also. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

There should be no discernable in/out play.. either the bearing is way gone.. or more likely.. a snap ring has popped out.. you need to get this fixed before it causes more wear problems that it likely already has. With that much play, the pto shaft can walk the collar out of engagement.. when it does this the collar and shaft splines can get chewed up on the ends..

time to pull 4 bolts and spill lotsa oil for a looksee..
