850 pto shaft housing

I started to get about two inches of play in my pto shaft so I took off the housing. I have the two snap rings and the oil seal but I found that the housing is busted at the large snap ring. This is a 55 850. My question is, can you drive the tractor without the shaft in it if I put the housing back in and put the cap on it. I have a few thing I could do while waiting for the part to come in. Just a thought I had and want to find out if its crazy or not. Thanks

The PTO shaft runs through both the hyd compartment and the rear end and there is a seal that separates the two. Your hyd fluid and rear end fluid will intermix (doesn't matter if you use 134D in both) and will obviously seek an equal level in both. Be sure you have enough fluid so that it reaches the level of the check hole in the differential. I don't think you can get the PTO cap to seal to the housing unless you put some kind of sealer on the threads.

Ditto what awhtx said... Those coarse threads on the pto cap will likely need lots of goop to seal.. and you will want to watch it real close ont he oil level so you don't create more problems than a bad pto bearing carrier..

Were you able to order just the housing or did you have to order a complete new pto assembly?

I might have a used pto housing laying around if you're interested. I'll have to look. I know I have a complete pto assembly out of an NAA on the shelf, but I don't know if it will work in an 800 series. Something tells me it's probably a tad short for the 800 or maybe the configuration is a little off.

I was able to order just the housing. I got it from this site(81.00) includes shipping. The local new holand dealer wanted 164.00 plus shipping. I didn't think to put it out there for you guys. Next time I will know better.
