1977 Ford 2600

I've got a pal with a problem.

He has a diesel Ford 2600 with a blown head gasket and can't find one. Seems Ford used two different thicknesses and his has the thin one. The thicker type is easy to find....but it's .040 (forty thousdanths) too thick. To use this thick gasket, he'll have to replace the pistons and different rods and rod bearings...or so he has been told.

Do any of you know a source of hard to find Ford engine parts...that may just have a NOS head gasket? Thanks.

i am no ace mechanic but i belive it will work just fine the little compesson lost shouldnt realy make a big diffeants

I only see NH listing one head gasket for the 2600 diesel. Part #82845222. Actually, the gasoline and diesel appear to be the same...I don't see where extra thickness would really matter to the point that it didn't lower compression too much. The other way around could matter though if the bumping clearance was so tight that the pistons would smack the head.

Personally, I don"t know how much compression loss would realistically occur by using a thicker head gasket. The 2600 is no powerhouse to begin with and I think they just use it for chores..feeding round bales and raking hay.

It only has 1200 actual hours on it and they have been easy ones.......the tractor has been repainted and looks like new.

It became hard to start and he took it to a well recommended mechanic and from there, he got the news that the thin head gasket couldn"t be found and using the thick one would require hi top pistons to get the compression back to specs and so forth. I think that"s a bunch of BS. Granted the compression ratio will be lower, but if the diesel will reliably start and run.....then I"d call it "good enough" before I"d dump a pile of money in that little tractor.

As far as I can tell there is only one head gasket shown for that engine. Period. There's no mention of two different thicknesses at all.
Put the OEM gasket on it and call it good...
I'd wonder what information is being given to him when he's talking about hi top pistons in a diesel anyway. Those pistons already protrude above the block and need the thick gasket or they'll hit the head as it is.
He'd do well to be very careful with whomever he's dealing with on this...

Rod

Rod you are right.
There is only one head gasket for these engines. Gas and diesel both. I've never heard of a thinner head gasket or a hitop piston for them.
I think the 'mechanic' needed to make a late mortgage payment or something.

Rod has given you good info. There is only one listing for the head gasket, it is readily available at any New Holland dealer, probably on the shelf at many, including the one where I work. The thicker gasket is listed for applications using the 201 CID 3 cylinder engine, which the 2600 does not. I hope your "mechanic" uses better info to torque the head and set the valves.
