What grade hardware for Bush Hog sheer bolt?

Just pulled my Dad's old 5' Bush Hog out of the woods and it needs a little TLC. What grade hardware will I need for the sheer bolt near the PTO/gearbox connection? My 4600 snapped the hardware store bolt immediately though I can easily turn the blades by hand. I'm thinking a grade 5 bolt will do the job. Ideas? Opinions? Smart aleck comments? :)

This forum has been a Godsend in the last few months for me. So much useful information.

Thanks.

Matt

Update-Bush Hog sheer bolt in reply to Matt1466, 08-15-2007 06:32:10
Just a quick note of thanks to all those who took the time to respond to the initial discussion. I've used the cutter for several hours since replacing the bolt with a grade 5. Mowed some pretty heavy brush with no problems but snapped the bolt when I backed into a thick sapling. Replaced the bolt and went on about my business. Looks like grade 5 is the way to go and provides good protection though the manual calls for a grade 8 bolt.

Thanks again.

Matt

Thanks for all the great information and especially for the link to the manual. This cutter is at least 25 years old and rusty so I'm not sure about the model number.

I tried a 5/16 grade 5 bolt and it fits perfectly in the flange. The PTO engaged and the cutter worked though I haven't actually cut any fields yet. I'll give it a try and let everyone know what happens.

I use a Dyno (Dyna?)66 and it takes a 1/2" bolt. I bust one every 2 months or so. I buy 4 or 5 more at Lowe's when I run out. I don't know the grade but I am happy to just change the bolt and not the gearbox. YMMV.

I was always told to use grade two bolts for shear pins. If this is too frustrating, then consider buying a slip clutch for the driveline. I saw one at TSC once that slipped over the input shaft of the gearbox input shaft. Not a cheap fix(I think it was around $150),but after enough bolts shear off, it may look like a bargain. Besides, it will end the temptation of putting in a Grade 8 bolt and doing some real damage.

grade 5 with 3 marks on the head do well but will still shear after a lot of shredding or hitting something big and hard...

grade 2 will shear just by popping the clutch and is ok for short grass with very clean fields and yards..

grade 9 will not shear and will destroy the gear box eventually if not sooner...

Sheer bolt type one.
this is the one that goes through the u joint yoke & the gear box shaft. If you have play in the hole or the wrong size bolt ,the bolt will shear easy
I use a 1/2 Grade 2 sheer bolt.
use a bolt long enough so threads are not in the hole.

Type two
Does not go through the gear box shaft
Two flanges back to back with A ear on each flange with a amall bolt about 5/16 1 to 1 1/4 long. is the sheer bolt. Keep the RPM down low wheen you put the PTO in gear on the 4600. If not she will hit hard.

Head over to your local Cat dealer and get some grade 9 bolts, then just keep a few spare gear boxes, pto shafts and other parts on the shelf ! :)

So much for the smart @ss comments, definitely meant to shear, best to use some consideration on what type is called for, not sure what manufacturer your is, might be possible to dig up some literature, then again might not be, had no luck finding any for my older Rhino SE-6.

Not sure, but seems rotary cutters have a lot of similarities between them, this Rhino has left hand threaded round shoulder bolts to attach the blades, that also shear off when something jambs up the works, did that once, left all the parts under the deck for me to find. It's also got the shear bolt on the p.t.o. shaft, which I'm not sure of the grade, was on it before I owned it.

All this coming from someone who is dumb enough to lose the tail wheel ( darned pin came out !) and run it over with the cutter on the return pass ! Did that last saturday, well it was getting dark.... did a number on the tail wheel, I think it bent a blade, there is a vibration, flip er over, off with the stump jumper pan again, check everything out, it's been a good one, and I took good care of it kept er greased, gear oil changed, everything tight, no leaks, probably one of the dumbest things I've done lately.

Hey Matt,

I just got a new brush cutter and all the literature recommended Grade 2 bolts for shear protection. If you get too hard of a bolt, you may lose the protection you want.

I tried Grade 2 bolts (5/16") in mine but they sheared in heavy grass. Changed to Grade 5 and haven't had any problems.

Be very careful with selection of the bolt. Grade 5 may be too hard and not provide adequate shear protection in the event you hit a stump or something. I have been using Grade 2 hardware store stuff for ages with no problems. Are you sure that you got the correct size bolt for the hole? I got one too small once and it snapped when I turn the PTO on.

The bolt I was using fit the hole correctly (5/16 I think) but sheered as soon as I engaged the PTO. Apparently the 4600 is notorious for having a PTO that is unforgiving when it starts turning.

I'll give the grade 5 bolt a try and be very careful until I make sure it's going to work OK.

Thanks for the replies.

Good luck on using a semi-hard bolt.. hope you don't shell out the gearbox.. or worse.. your tranny / pto section.

Are you engaging the pto at very low rpm.. IE.. less than 1000.. etc..

Yes, I engaged the PTO with the throttle at the lowest position. Sheered the hardware store bolt (no markings at all on the head)right off.

I checked the hole and it is a 5/16. 1/2 will not fit at all.

Is this indeed a hole in the shaft/yoke.. or in a flange?

Any elongation in the hole?

It's a hole in a flange. It is not elongated and the bolt fits tight.

I'd try to find a manual.. sometimes the ones with the flange DO use a smaller diameter slightly harder bolt.. etc.

one half inch by 3 in my BushHog 5ft gr 2 in reply to Matt1466, 08-15-2007 09:52:36
a five sixteenth bolt is way to small. The hole if it's a bush hog brand should be 1/2 in. if not drill out to 1/2 in. A 5' rotary cutter should require approximately the same HP to run. Go with the 1/2" grade 2 and you should be fine. bjr

5/16 is the size of the hole and the cutter is a Bush Hog Squealer, 5 ft. I think.

Thanks for all the information and replies!

We sell Bush Hog equipment and some of the Squealer takes a 8mm grade 5. Avoid the metric with threads all the way to the head.If it has two ears that you alien and put bolt thru then it is 8mm X 35mm.
