my dad owns a 1979 ford 6600 that has been parked for about 6 years. we been thinking about restrarting it again. i eas thinking about changing all the fluids, but a friend told me that just changing the fluids was not enough. that the engine could be locked up, and that we should take the engine apart first before restarting it. is this true? what should i do? any comments will help thanx

Manuel, Turning the engine over after so many years in storage is risking the possibility of scoring the cylinder walls, pistons, cracking the rings etc, etc. You should remove all the spark plugs, add cheap ATF fluid, one quart is enough for all 4 cyl. Put the plugs back in and let it sit for a few days. Then remove the plugs and with tranny in neutral try to turn the engine by hand on the fin blade. If it turns somewhat but is hard to turn try adding some more ATF a second time. Then a couple of days later you can try to turn the engine with starter. If it turns easily without any funny noises you can actually try to get it started. Good luck.

True, it could be seized up... I wouldn't push the panic button just yet though. Put a battery in it and see what happens. If it turns over, then look at changing the oil. I would more importantly have a look in the fuel tank and see if it has clean fuel in it. IF it does, then fire it up. IF it doesn't, drain the tank, and as much of the fuel in the system as possible, clean it, change the filters, fill the tank and bleed it. Then start it up. It would also be a good idea to check the air filter and intake for crap, birds nests, etc...
I'd only go tearing the engine down if I knew for certain that it was stuck. Just play with it first and see what happens. I restarted an old Cummins last fall that had sat for 2 years, and was put away wet so to speak... IT started fine although it did have some stuck rings. After running a while it tightened up and worked the same as when it was parked. Just see what happens with yours and don't force anything.
