Ford 4600 Hydraulic Fluid Level

I recently purchased a 1979 4600 SU. I replaced all fluids and I am trying to find out how to check the level of the hydraulic fluid in the rear end. Any kind of picture or sketch etc would be helpful to find the plug that defines full on this unit. I checked old posts and they describe a plug on the right side as you sit on the tractor, but I have several of those and I don't know which one is correct.

Thanks for any help! -B

4000s had a small "check bolt" on the hydraulic pump just above the running board and not the regular pipe plug on them for a check level... They were different from the 2000/3000's

4600s should have a dip stick on them on the trans fill cap or on the left rear just in front on the axle coming out of the "check cover".. if i remember correctly...

brian, i hope you enjoy your 79 4600. my 78 3600 has a fill plug on top of the right (rear axle, i think about 2" in diameter. on of those large size with a gasket. for level check, there is a plug that would be handy to your right ankle. if it looks like a bolt head, that is not it, and do not turn it. as there is a nut on the inside which will now require some disassembly to retighten. it should be an allen or pipe plug. if unsure, wait til you get a pic or manual.

Brian, look about 6or8" down below your lift handles on side of diff housing. It will be an alien head plug or later ones had square head plug. Add fluid in plug behind the seat until it starts to run out check plug.

Thanks for the response. There are 3 plugs that take an allen wrench that are in the round housing by your right fiit under the lift levers. Is it one of those? I don"t see anything else in that area that looks like a plug.

brian, try this to help. if you have a valid dip stick, pull it out and place it on the right side of the housing about the height it would be when installed, and look level for the plug that is appx the height of your diptsick "good" level.

I don"t have a dipstick. I don"t see one anywhere on the rear end. My other tractor is a 5600 and the sump is connected between the rear end and transmission on that tractor, but they are separate for the 4600. I found the dipstick for the transmission for the 4600, but it is the rear end where I am having trouble setting the fluid level. I have ordered the I&T for this tractor, hopefully that will have pictures when it comes.

Thanks for the help.

Brian, no, you must be up on the flow control valve. Move down on the vert housing itself and maybe back a little. The alien head is a little hard to see. Make sure,if it is alien,to get a good fitting alien wrench the first time. I think a hulk tightened some of these.
