I am a neophyte with tractor repair -- any help will be appreciated. I have a Ford 4400 diesel and I think it is about a 1985 model. It has the front loader but no back hoe. Generator froze up and I replaced the bearings, but it broke the fan belt. I can't see any EASY way to change the fan belt. 1) There is a shaft going forward from the crank shaft pulley that prevents me from slipping the new fan belt onto the pulley. It looks like it runs to the hydraulic pump -- I think. 2) And there is almost no room for me to get my hands in there to do any wrench work. What is the proper way (easy way?) to put on the new fan belt?

It appears that I have to remove that shaft or something. HELP! ;-)

Thanks --John

Oh, forgot one thing.

There is usually one spot where getting the bolt out is easyest. If you rotate the crank over to that spot, it may save some trouble, and skin, blood, pain, etc.

No, I don't know where it is on your tractor. It was from the left side top bolt position on mine. I used a long bar to rotate the crank. It was a LOT less pain putting them on from that location, than taking them off from the others.

I just put a new belt on my 1967 5000 Diesel with generator and that was NO fun. Between the fan shroud cutting into the back of my hand while I was trying to work the belt over the fan blades and trying to work around the SOS fluid lines to the radiator, I was laughing just to keep from crying! And I don't even have a loader pump driveshaft to deal with.
All I can add is Good Luck and you'll be cussing the Ford engineer who designed it until the job is complete.

You have to unhook the shaft or connector to get the belt on. That's why it's "almost" no room!

Usually, taking off the bolts that hold the flange to the crankshaft are the place to start. Then push the shaft forward slightly and swing it down. Of course, I have never done this on a 4400, so be sure to inspect carefully for the best side to start on!

I can see the bolts, but it sure looks like a challenge to even get a wrench anywhere near them. I am 6ft 4in and about 230 lbs, but reasonably adept at getting into motorcycle engines and other small engines, but it looks pretty hard to get into the very limited area from either the top or the bottom on the 4400.

John,

As long as you can see the bolts, you can get to the bolts. It may help to have an Extra Elbow (joke!).

If you have air tools a 3/8 paddle wrench can be your best friend.

When I changed belts on my PS pump, the fan shroud cut the back of my forearm while the fan was cutting my thumb. Not a "fun" job at all. Of course, I'm a pretty tiny guy at 6'2" and 205. You would think that a tractor would have all the room in the world, but nooo.

If your tractor had a generator, then it was no later than '75. That could make it a 4400. If it's later than a '75, then I don't believe it's a 4400. More likely a 545 or something of that nature. It would be good to chase that down when you go ordering parts. The unit code and serial number should be stamped on a flat spot to the rear of the starter, as well as on an info tag under the hood.
To change the belt, I'd start by unbolting the coupling from the crank pulley. I think the most room you're going to get for that dirty little job is on the left side. There's usually some room to slide in there below the fan, to the rear of the rad. I hope you don't have big arms..... If not, then you might be removing the cowl and rad. IF you think this will be a problem again, slip another belt in there, and tie it off out of the way. Then it's there when you need it. HTH.
