I have a newly acquired 1980 or 1981 Ford 3600 Diesel. It runs great. Only problem I am having is getting the PTO engaged without grinding. I tried all combinations of having the trans in neutral, clutch pushed in or out, Hi/lo range in neutral etc. Still can't engage the PTO without grinding. What am I doing wrong? My present strategy is to sit in neutral with the clutch pushed in, RPMs under 1000 and just quickly whack the PTO lever to engage the PTO. If I am lucky I can get it gooing with minimal grinding noise. SO far I am only using the PTO with a 6ft shredder deck.

Tom, you tractor has a Borg and Beck two stage clutch D8NN-7502-AA. If it was mine, I would check for free travel in the pedal first, and make sure you have enough travel to operate the PTO disc, but if your luck is like mine, your problem is in the clutch assembly. Your clutch has 3 levers that operate the tractor drive disc and PTO disc, unlike the old style Long 6 lever clutch. Side links and their adjustment is very important, must split and install clutch assembly in a fixture to do. Your tractor could have the original clutch and sooner or later its bad. I sell these in great numbers and keep 12 to 15 in stock. If you do replace, just remember the assembly does not include the tractor drive disc because there are 10 spline and 15 spline tractor drive discs that can go with this clutch...good luck, Kelly

If there are two sets of holes in the clevis at the front of the clutch rod, the clevis pin must be in the rear set of holes for the two-stage clutch to work. (This sets the clutch pedal quite high.) The clutch needs to have the specified amount of free play at the top. I'm sure you're aware that bumping it into gear does damage.

I would suspect that the tractor has a 2-stage clutch, and the PTO disc is stuck, and not disengaging. You should notice that there is some difference in resistance in the clutch as you push the pedal down. About 1/2 way down, the feeling should change as the second stage starts to disengage. That's my best guess.
To cure the beast, the easiest solution is to simply split the tractor, and free the clutch up. You can probably get away without replacing much of anything, just take it apart and free the disc. Those tractors don't really take a lot of time to split. Some people seem to encounter a mental bloc, and would do anything rather than a split to solve the problem. It takes a couple hours to split, provided there is no loader involved. Probably a day's work to be back together. HTH.

Other thing to consider, if it is 2 stage (Live PTO) is linkage. Since the PTO clutch is all the way down on the pedal, if the linkage won't let the clutch release when you push down on the pedal you could have the same problem. You would need to shorten your linkage (like screw in the clevis at the front end of the bar to the pedal) to shorten it's length and give you more pull on the clutch arm for the same amount of pedal travel.

Check that before you split it. May be all you need.

Good point Mark. Could be that simple.

Thank you all for your advice and input. I am new to tractors in general and I have alot to learn about them. I am aware that grinding the PTO is causing some damage so I tried not to do it more than necessary to get the job done.

This tractor has a 2 stage clutch and I did find that the clutch linkage is pretty sloppy. I plan to adjust the clutch and if that does not solve the issue, it will be time to buy the service manual and get to work.

Thanks again.

Slop is your problem.....but you can still make up for it in the external adjustment. The problem though is this.....the more the slop the higher will be the clutch pedal at rest (when you get it to release properly...fully depressed). This may be uncomfortable.

To split and go in and redo the clutch is gonna be around $500 in parts alone if nothing else needs fixin. Lotta money if a tweak will fix it.
