Help: I have just purchased the above mentioned tractor. The engine has been disassembled. It is a four cylinder diesel. I am having trouble finding any information on this tractor. Queation; can this engine be changed out to a gasoling engine? If so what? Can I find parts for the existing diesel engine? How do I find out what year this tractor was manufactured?
Thanks to everyone.

That tractor came with either a 144 cu in diesel engine or a 134 cu in gasoline engine. Both engines used the same block (basically) so if you found a good 134 gas or even a 172 gas engine you should be able to swap it in. Before you go to that trouble, you should make sure the Select-o-speed transmission is good because if it isn't, that's going to be the expensive thing to fix.

As for what year your tractor is, you usually determine that from the serial number. Unfortunately, due to the battery location on the diesel models, often the serial number gets wiped out by 40 years of leaking battery acid. Just in case your serial number survived, the link below will show you where to find it and how to tell what year your tractor is. If the s/n is no longer readable, you still might be able to determine age from date codes on the rear axle housings or the radiator.

Jim, Is there a simple way to check the select-o-speed transmission without any engine power?

None that I know of, but I'm hardly an SOS expert. What did the seller say about the tranny before you bought it? Now that the deal is done, maybe you could get some honest answers from him regarding condition of the transmission....assuming he was less than honest before the deal was done (which I can't say for sure). Hopefully you got the tractor cheap enough that you can afford to put an engine in it. Then if the transmission has problems you could spend more to swap to a 4 or 5 speed and still not be hurt too bad. Or you could punt and start taking the tractor apart and sell the good pieces. You might even come out ahead that way.

Jim Thanks you have been very helpful.
The story is; I bought a very nice 8N tractor with a brush mower and this 601 all together for $2500. It seemed like a good deal to me however I am new at the tractor business. The 601 was partly disembled but the tractor as a whole looked rebuildable. The head and the oil pan was removed from the engine. It has been apart for a long time. The rest of the tractor was all together. I suppose I have a project. Do you know an inexpensive place to buy parts? Thanks again.

The transmission is proable okay. If the engine is apart then there was only engine trouble I would think. Get you a manual and get going on the engine. Take the head to a automotive machine shop and have it checked. Check in the exhaust ports on the head and see if there is a lot of carbon. Could indicate some oil burning. Engine overhaul parts are available at a lot of places including this forum. The injection pump is proable okay, but you can take it and the injectors to a pump shop and have them checked. You are looking at in the neighbor hood of about $1500 for engine overhaul (this includes all machine work.) Add about $500 for injector pump if it needs rebuilt. The tractor would be a very good tractor after the overhaul.

Sounds like you got the 601 for free. If you really want a project, go for it. Myself, I'd part it out and help cover the cost of the 8N.

I would sell the 8N and redo the 601 with the proceeds. You would have a much better tractor.

Hurley, Jim, Thanks for the info, I need all the help I can get. I did pick up a Primedia manual on both tractors. They too are very helpful, however the manual of the 601 does not show any views of the engine left side. I am missing the manifolds and I have no idea how that side should be. Also can you make a gas engine out of a diesel simply by changing the head and droping the injector system? Is there some reason why there would be water in the gear box oil on the 8N?
Thanks again

The intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds are two pieces on this tractor. The muffler was short and mounted on the exhaust manifold. The muffler was next to the engine and not on the tailpipe like the 8N. Call this number and talk to Kenny. 1-800-342-3551. I bought a used exhaust manifold for the 172 engine from him for $35.00. They only scrap Fords and may have everything you need and they ship anywhere in the world. Was the person you bought the 601 tractdor scrapping it out and sold off some of the parts. Can you find out much info on it, such as was the trans. working when parked. Sometimes it is only the overrunning clutch on the front of the transmission that causes the problem, could be more but not proable less. Also ask kenny about a gas head, a distributor, and maybe if the pistons are the same. I would think that the gas pistons my have a different compression ratio. Also you will need the gas manifold and intake manifold. This are avilable new from places different than New Holland, I think about $135.00. I think this was from Tisco. They gas manifold is a one piece design. Hope this helps some.

Hur;ey, Yes, the info was very helpful. I will call Kenny at that number. I have not been able to contact the person who tore down the engine yet. but at least I have a name.
Thanks so much for all the help.

Water can easily get into the gearbox of an 8N through a leaky gearshift boot (rubber thingy at the base of gearshift lever). Those often get old and cracked letting rainwater in.

Jim Thanks, I'll check the rubber thingy ( I love humor myself) When I checked the gear oil the dip stick came out really frosted so I drained the oil, also more water than I would think possible from condensation. I really appreciate your help.

A good SoS is a fine tranny - when it works. When it goes belly up, it can cost more to fix than a good working tractor. There are steps in between, but not so many mechanics & parts available for those trannies any more....

I too would be worried about putting money into the engine, only to find a shot tranny as well.
