The other day I was dragging a field, parked the tractor and all was well until I went out to use it again a couple days later. It wouldn't start, no spark. In my research I determined the points weren't opening very far if at all. Turns out that the rubbing block was wore (mine doesn't have an oiling pad on it) and there was no grease on the lobes. What disturbed me most was the excessive wobble in the distributor shaft. I could change the point setting at least .0040 if not more by simply wiggling the shaft, enough to readily see it by eye. I can't know which way to adjust the points so I assumed the points would push the distributor shaft over so I adjusted them that way and I got the tractor working. I am not happy with all the wear. It seems there is a bushing in the distributor you can replace, probably by removing the roll pin on the bottom of the distributor. Has anyone done this? If not, do you know a source of good distributors?

Thanks!

Lew

While you're at it, check the hexagonal shaft that turns the distributor from the oil pump. See if you can get at it and pull it out. they wear down and in some cases will stop a tractor cold when the hex shaped shaft becomes rounded over from wear and spins.

Thanks to both of you...The New Holland dealer said there was a bushing that could be replaced and I am sure the cost is nominal but I didn't know how hard of a job it would be to replace and the chance of cracking the howsing or having other problems trying to swap it out. Obviously buying a whole new distributor that is in good shape is an option of the cost is low enough.

I had heard of but had forgotten about the electronic conversion. The tractor was already modified to 12V and I installed the kit to convert it to an alternator.

I would rather not spend $100 on it right now. Other than not dealing with points in an ongoing basis, just how much difference can it make vs. points? It is hard to imagine it can deliver the spark "better"? Is it actually changing the spark curve if that is the word to use. In other words does it change the spark duration or some other characteristic of the spark??

I have not hooked an oscilloscope to the terminal to view the timing so I don't know how it compares to the dwell (on-off time) of ignition points. It must be a pretty fat pulse as it is so insensitive to distributor angular position.

Better spark? Depends what you are talking about. It won't grow green gungie and corrode, won't pit, won't get set to the wrong gap, fires every time, not sensitive to timing (dwell).

Those sound like excellent reasons to have better performance. Besides, if you order a 40,000 volt coil to replace your current 18,000 your engine will run smoother and idle like a diesel.

Hehe... I have never grown green gungie on points and my mileage is low enough such that pitting isn't an issue and if all is well, it will fire every time.

How can timing not be an issue? The spark has to fire at the appropriate time such that you don't get pinging or wasted fuel by firing too late?

Besides, when is the last time you heard a tractor ping....at 6:1 compression ratio..... naw.

Lew, the distributor can be rebuilt with new shaft bushings or replaced. There is a distributer for sale on e-bay now you may want to look at. The rebuild parts are available from several sources including New Holland. Check some of the board sponsors as well. Good luck.
