Does anyone know of an aftermarket tachometer that can be used on a diesel engine. All I have ever seen (J.C. Whitney and such) are for gas engines.

I heard of an upgrade kit for the instrument panel, but I had already replaced everything but the tach.

If by chance you have thrown away the worthless generator on your rig and replaced it with an alternator, some aftermarket tachs can sense off of a phase tap on the back of the alternator. Obviously, it would have to be calibrated, but that is not hard to do.

Assuming you still have the generator and the mechanical drive on the back of it, you might be able to find a mechanical tach for it, but it might be a long shot also, since it turns counterclockwise, which is opposite of most tachs today.

Another option is a digital tach that would use some sort of magnetic pickup reading off of the flywheel ring gear or engine front pulley. I think this would be the most expensive, however it would also be the most accurate.
