heat was the key. in trying to save steering wheel from destruction i could not get the nut hot enough. so i broke off some of the rubber (it was cracked anyway) got the nut veddy hot and the wheel popped right off.
i will trim remaing rubber and let it ride.

If you would look in the archives there has been at least one person that rebuilt his steering wheel using Automotive Bondo if I remember correctly and he said it turned out good and this way he kept the original look.
 
I used it and the before looked exactly like the one pictured. I cracked off the rubber equal on all 3, tapered with bondo, sanded and painted.

Yeah, real fast, don't put to much of the tube part and be sure to squeesh the tube a few times to mix the insides before opening. The gray and red(tube) comes out a light pink when mixed properly.
