My brother in law has a FERGUSON tractor. It was made in England and he is needing to replace the exhaust intake manifold but we can not figure out if the tractor is a 20 or 30. The serial number on the metal plate of the steering wheel is TE-74522...is there somewhere on the tractor or some way we can determine what kind it is??? Thank you!!

Based on the serial number you have a 1948 TE20. For replacing the manifold, the type of engine is more important. TE20, TO20, and TO30s with the Continental Z120/129 engines use the same manifold. The Standard engine used in the later TEA20s used a different manifold.

Hello Dan
Thank you so much for this information. Is there an easy way to find out the type of engine? Is it written somewhere we can find it? If you know this it would be so helpful and thank you for your help. Have a great day!!

The continenatla engines ghave a data plate on the left side of the block at the block to cylinder head split line about midway back from the radiator The Standard engine uses in the TEA-20 has an oil filter on the left side of the block while the Continental Z120(used in the TE-20) has an internal filter in the oil pan. The Z129 Continental(TO-30) has an external oil filter on the right side of the block near the back.
Since your serial number has the TE prefix, I believe it"s a TE-20 with the Continental Z120 engine.

Jerry has the engine ID facts for you. If you do have the Continental engine, there are two types of new manifolds available. The most commonly found (and cheaper) is the type used on Ferguson 35s with the Z134 Continental engine but they work fine on the older TE20/TO20/TO30 Fergusons. They look different but the only main functional difference is where the exhaust pipe attaches to the manifold. The original manifold has a beveled flange and clamp where the pipe attached, whereas the later/replacemnt manifold and pipe has a three bolt flange with a gasket. Many times the new manifold will come with an adapter to allow use of the older style pipe connection. If you need a new muffler pipe assembly anyway and you get the newer style replacement manifold you can buy a Ferguson TO 35 muffler which will bolt up directly to the new style manifold and eliminate the need for the adapter.

There is also a new replacement manifold that looks like the older style manifolds if originality is important to you. They tend to cost a bit more however.

Your tractor was made in 1948 so it could have a Continental Z120 Engine or the Standard Engine.
If you look at the left side of the Engine and the location of the Oil Filler for the Engine if it is just above the Starter then it is a Standard Motors Engine, if the Oil Filler is just in front of the Distributor it is a Z120 Continental. There are no 30's in the UK, they were all called TE20's but with a third letter in the serial prefix to denote just what it was. All you need to know is if it is a Standard Engine or a Continental Engine and order a manifold for that type of Engine. It doesn't matter what the size of the Engine is, the manifolds are all the same for the Engine type....John(UK)[email protected]
