i lost my brakes on my to 30 ferguson 1952. had fluid running out my brake drums. removed rear brake drum and found my brakes were wet with oil. removed real axle shaft to replace seal. my shop manuel says on a to30 there is no outer seal juast a inner seal. in my parts manuel it shows it has a inner and outer. can someone help me. my bearing is dry too. bok says it needs packed with grease? i got the inner seal out but if it does have a outer how do i get axle shaft coolar off which is holding bearing in? any help would be appreciated

The outer seal on your later type tractor is to keep grease in and dust out. Usually if you repack your bearing with a good quality grease and fit a new inner seal it will suffice. Reuse all your old shims and then check for free play by pulling the shaft in and out. This is trial and error, removing one shim at a time and tightening at least 3 bolts until it is set correct. make sure, when you are happy with the lack of in-out movement, that when you turn the axle the other side revolves in the opposite direction, if both turn the same way then the axle ends are hitting in the middle and binding. If this is the case you need new bearings.

The Hub that holds the Bearing and the outer seal needs pulling off the Shaft after you have drilled the collar and removed it. Can be hard to remove and pressures in excess of 25 tons are often required. The Bearing should be pre-packed and then checked every 12 months and packed again. If you don't do this the Bearing wears and causes wear on the Oil seals. But the seals get hard with age and crack as well. The End Float in the Rear Axle needs adjusting when you replace the Shaft.
