Today my 1957 TO-35 developed a noise or tick in the front of the motor.

sounds like a loose tappet, but am not sure.

For sure, I am not a happy camper!!!!

this next week i will pull the fuel tank and check the tappets. Have never had one come loose. so i am concern that may not be my problem.

noise will come and go, but it seem to be getting worse, so i will not run it any more until i can get it fixed.

any ideas what the noise might be.

i run shell rotella 15w40 oil and have for years. always holds good oil pressure.

thanks for any replys,

I had a Valve Rocker worn at one time. It developed wear to one side and as the Valve opened the Rocker moved to the side and hit the Rocker shaft pedestal, this caused the ticking noise...never had one since. Just run the engine with the Valve cover off and you will see it.Oil is fine.Could also be the nut on the front of the Camshaft has come loose and the cam is sliding in the Block, it can damage the Distributor drive if it gets worse..John(UK)[email protected]

now dont laugh!over the years i've found loose fan belts slapping, waterpump bolts come loose hitting fan blades, fan blades coming loose....

Hello, My 55, to35 got a ticking in the front that came and went away at times,I took the belt off and run it for a coupple of second, noise was gone. I put a new bearing and bushing in the generator and thought i fixed it , then it came back again, turned out to be a water pump bearing going bad, Had to replace the pump. Hope this helps-ed

I bought one of those motor Stethoscopes and checked all around the motor after it warmed up.

the noise seems to be coming from the lower part of the front of the motor around the oil pan.
up around the tappet cover, the noise is the same as at the rear of the motor side etc:

of course the noise can radiate from any point.

will take my time and caution before i start tearing into the motor,

will have a few gearheads come over and listen to the noise.

not what i needed right before bush hogging time.
thanks for your inputs.

had a couple of my gear heads look at the old tractor today.

they, like me could not tell where the noise is coming from. we all agree is sounds loudest low around the front of the motor.

defiantly does not sound like a loose tappet, but more like a loose rod bearing or something in the timing gears????

guess i am going to have to take it to one of the local tractor fixit guys.

like to do my own work but do not know where to start.

guess on a 1957 TO-35 you can not take the oil pan off by itself to check the rod bearings?

thanks for any help or advice.
