Warning Cylinder Head Studs TEA20

I was replacing the head gasket on my TEA20 ferguson which had one damaged head stud on the upper thread and another 2 that were a little too far coroded. I purchased some new studs from sparex, installed them and proceded to tighten the cylinder head down in stages, with intent to obtain the required final torque of 65-65 ft lb. When the torque reached around 50-55 ft lb the aftermarket studs began to stretch and the torque reading would not go higher. I backed the head off and replaced the studs with some old genuine ferguson ones from a spare block a friend had, they all reached final torque figure without issue, it was most annoying, I was FURIOUS!! and to think that ferguson knew how to get it correct back in the 1950s but we cant make them now was dissapointing, I hope you fellow repairers do not have this happen to you, comments welcome, Matt.

That doesn't surprise me. I have seen tests where a lot of foreign grade 8 bolts were only as strong as American made grade 5.

How better to conquer an enemy than to first weaken his weapons and then his wallet?
Yes, you american people. The war is already over and we just haven"t enough sense to stop flopping like a fish out of water.
Need another hint? How about the american olympic team wearting clothing made in China?
Whoops!

Matt. Struck that before. BareCo and Sparex after market studs are made in India I think. Cr@p quality mild steel. I've long since learned it is better to recycle the original parts if possible, rather than use the cheap quality after market bits.

I sourced a couple of Jaguar studs and all my Ferguson exhaust and intake manifold studs through the local nut and both supplier, good quality Aussie steel!

It's not that they are weaker, they are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Torque them, and next morning the heads could be on the floor. They even used fake certifications and got them into vehicles and nuclear plants.
Some people were looking to hang someone back in the 80's.

make certain you contact sparex or the dealer selling them , I sell aftermarket parts and always contact the company when there is a problem with a part . Problems can't be corrected unless they know about it .
