JLBeller 07-13-2012 20:01:11 208.81.114.115 Report to Moderator	I have a 1955 TO 35 that will run for about 15 seconds and then it begins to sputter and die. If you place your hand over the air-intake for a moment and then let off, it catches and runs for another few seconds. If you cup your hand and hold it over the air intake it will run just fine. I"ve tried ajusting the carb. but to no success. Before it began doing this, it would run for several minutes and then choke out. I"ve cleaned and ajusted the carb., replaced plugs, and changed the coil. [Reply]   [No Email]

Jerry/MT 07-14-2012 07:14:43 206.183.116.145 Report to Moderator	Re: T035 Carb and Air Filter in reply to JLBeller, 07-13-2012 20:01:11   Your getting it to start and run by hand choking is indicative of weak spark (weak sparks need richer mixtures),inadequate fuel delivery( float setting or fuel delivery blockage) resulting in a lean mixture, a vacuum leak around the carbs metering section, a maladjusted carb or a dirty carb. If you have a good spark(FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, the color of lightning), then checkthe fuel delivery to the carb. Hold a can under the carb and remove the plug from the carb"s fuel bowl.You should have a CONTINUOUS gush of fuel from the bottom of the carb. If it dribbles or is intermittentent, you need to check the flters in the sedimentbowl/tank valve and the fuel inlet elbow to the carb. If you have adeqate fuel delivery, check the carb mixture adjustments(1-1/4 turns out on the power jet and 3/4 turns out on the idle air). You can check for air leaks( carb shaft seals, carb to manifold gasket, manifold to cylinder head gasket, cracked or rusted) using starting fluid sprayed around these locations with the engine running. When you hit the leak, the engine will speed up momentarily. If that checks out, your carb probably needs a good cleaning esepcially in the area of the idle and transition fuel passages.   [Reply]  [No Email]
maxwell99 07-14-2012 06:10:40 208.92.105.34 Report to Moderator	Re: T035 Carb and Air Filter in reply to JLBeller, 07-13-2012 20:01:11   when it dies, have you ever pulled a sparkplug wire and turned over the motor to be sure its still firing. you need to this to insure its not sometype electrical problem that is shorting out your system after a short run time. new coil does not auto mean good coil, key switch, loose wire, etc: just be sure you are still getting fire to plugs. probaby not: but at your present state you must suspect everything. most times when it does something as you describe, it's a stopped up carb. (normally when it will run better when you pull the choke (as you are doing with your hand over air inlet) you have a plugged up carb. how long did you let the carb set in the cleaner. did your carb kit come with new floats? once I had a coil that would get hot after a short time and the engine would die, that is why i said to check electrial system first. be sure to post what fixed the tractor as all of us may need the info in the future. did you replace or clean the fuel filter in the carb. at elbow, it can be stopped up. do you have a good flow of fuel to the carb, that you have a vented fuel tank cap   [Reply]  [No Email]
JLBeller 07-15-2012 19:37:03 208.81.114.115 Report to Moderator	Re: T035 Carb and Air Filter in reply to maxwell99, 07-14-2012 06:10:40   I've soaked and rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs and coil, cleaned the air filter and it still does the same thing. I checked the manifold and can't detect any leaks although there is a screw broken off from the manifold where it connects to the exaust pipe. There is a slight chance that the fuel shut off is not working well since it did not appear to be as much fuel as you described coming out. I will recheck.   [Reply]  [No Email]
