I have an FE35 standard gasoline engine and my timing chain broke and also wiped out the governor and took a chunk out of the aluminum cover. I have the parts on order. So the question is; how do I go about setting the cam properly? I can see a mark on each sprocket but the cam sprocket can apparently be installed in any of four positions. Thanks, TDF |

It is likely the governor broke first and then jammed between chain and housing. A very fragile assembly.

Actually there are more of the Flyweight type fitted than the ball type. What wears the Flyweight Governor is not changing the oil. We have tractors with very high hours but have been serviced properly and they still have the original Governor. So maybe that tells you a story. This flyweight type was used right up until the 87mm engine in the 135 If you prefer the Ball type then fit one..John(UK)..fergusontractors@hotmail.com)

I'm doing the same with the fe35. Mine needed the front seal replaced and I discovered the loose chain. They sent me 2 cam sprockets by mistake and the new gear has no marks but John came thru with the info.I hope yours didn't bend valves when it jumped timing.Don't forget the new seal.

If you haven't removed the Sprocket from the camshaft then there is no problem, and you just align the scribe marks after making sure that number one piston is at TDC and the Valves on number 4 are just rocking (one is closing as the other is opening). If you have removed it, then it will need re-setting properly.I will tell you now that you will need some concentration while you get it set correctly, but it isn't that bad. More than likely the Governor will also need setting again after all this time. If you need this info about how to re-set everything, just email me direct at the address below and I will send you the info that you need to do it correctly...John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com

Thanks John, I received the instructions. Maybe I'll be able to absorb some of it while the parts are on the way. It's people like you and others who make it possible for us to keep this old iron from the Chinese. I'm far from rich but I could go buy a new tractor today. What kind of fun and a sense of accomplishment would there be in that? Thanks again, TDF
