Greetings gentlemen, My TO 35 is stuck in 1st gear. The lever appears to be in about the neutral possision but the tranny is in 1st gear. H/L lever works freely and tractor operates but I can"t shift to any other gear. I removed filler and tried to move things as previous posts had suggested, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Move the selectors that the bottom of the Gear Lever fits into rather than trying to move a gear
If you are stuck in first gear like you say, the selector you want to move is the one furthest away from the oil filler and it will be forward towards the engine, you need to move this one back, level with the other one. To avoid this happening again, you should take your time changing gear, slow the engine revs right down and always make sure that the Clutch is set correctly so that there is no drag on the plate and it is hard to change gear. There should be 3/8" free play in the pedal clearance and you should set this when the tractor is hot. To adjust the clearance, slacken the clamp on the pedal slightly just enough to turn the shaft using a bar through the hole in the shaft, turn it clockwise and keep the pedal fully raised while you do this and then check the free-play, if it is too tight, just strike the pedal with a wrench or small hammer to shock it a little to give extra play. Once you have correct amount, tighten the clamp. If you don't have enough play in the pedal, the throwout bearing will be running all the time and will soon breakdown. I have attached a picture that shows the selectors and you will have a better idea when you have looked at it. You will see the selectors as two square holes, they should be side by side together.
If you still have trouble, email me direct and I can send you more information...John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com

Thank you John UK, the picture is very helpful. Do you think I will be able to get at it through the filler hole or will I need to pull the top off? Thanks again for all your help, the hydraulics are working great that you helped me with a few years ago.

Glad to hear that your hydraulics are still working OK.
Yes you can get to the Selector through the Oil Filler,it's a bit tight but it can be done and its easy once you have done it the first time. Just remember that the position of the bottom end of the selector is directly opposite to where the lever is at the top because it pivots in the middle. Once you get used to that idea you are half-way there. A long screwdriver is useful for this job and not too thick and heavy. No need to remove top cover at all...Let me know if you have problems, email me direct and then I can send whatever info that you need..John(UK)....fergusontractors@hotmail.com

Place hi-lo in start position, this will remove any gear bind. Shift lever ball is in 2-3 rail slot so you have no neutral crossover with 1st-reverse in 1st gear. Go through oil fill port with a long bar or screwdriver and move the large gear back to neutral. When shift lever will cross back over you have it fixed. This works UNLESS something is broken inside. Had a MH 50 once what had a broken shift fork, was in gear even in neutral and still had lever crossover, when in 2 or 3 engine would die as trans was in 2 gears at once with broken shift fork.

Thanks Dieseltech, I'll try again tomorrow. I'm not sure what gear I should be trying to move. There is a larger gear that spins with the engine running and I can spin it with engine off and clutch depressed. But I could not get it to move forward or backwards. Will try again.
