I have a question regarding my oil filter - first of all, it is not externally mounted. I dropped the pan and found a round shaped disk with a screen on it. The disk was mounted to an arm that floats in the oil in the sump - no replacement filter.
I have 2 different serial numbers on the tractor - the one on the dash is in the 112000's and the one on the side of the motor is in the high 123000's. The serial numbers would seem to indictae it's a T-30., but didnt all the t30's have an external oil filter?

its a TO30 you can cause confusion between all the models if you leave out part of the pre-fix and you could finish up with wrong parts or information. A TO30 with a Z129 Continental Engine has a floating filter like you say but it does have an external filter on the Right side

Just to clarify, it"s not a floating filter per se. It"s part of the oil pickup tube and it has a coarse screen on it. The oil filter on the TO-30 is externally mounted on the right had side. I believe the TO-20 has just has an oil pickup tube and the oil filter is internal to the oil pan.

Thanks for the replies. I can see where the hole behind the carb has been plugged. I would guess someone took off the canister and just plugged the hole. It also is missing the oil lines. Can someone explain where those lines leave the motor and enter the oil filter? Also - where might i purchase the filter and lines? Thanks so much.

The oil passages to the external filter are internal. There are no external oil lines exept where the oil pressure gauge sense line comes out of the block.

Thanks - i am posting two pics to show the side of the block on my tractor. One shows where I think it should go and the other shows a plug where I think it might be possible to mount one externally - what do you think ?

That boss appears to me to be too small for an external filter. Do you have a data plate on the left hand sice of the block idetifying the engine? Is it a Z120 or a Z129?

The only number i can read is 136230 - which tells me its a to30 with an external filter. I have dropped the pan and there is no internal filter. so it should be a z129.

The plug behind the carb is the water jacket drain. The little square 'plug' is just part of the casting of the block, don't know why its there. Here is a picture of a TO30 showing the oil filter location. You can also see the water jacket drain. Its possible you have a Z120 block that someone fitted the oil pickup system from a Z129 engine into in which case you would have no filter.

I think that plugged hole is the water jacket drain. It"s easy enough to check however!

Dan - thanks so much for the picture - I would guess thats what happened. The picture you sent is exactly what I have been looking for. My block is definately not like yours. When I dropped the pan, I found no oil filter either - just a pickup tube with a disk shaped screen on the end. Again, thanks - looks like i will run mine without the oil filter and change often.Jerry - you are right- that plugged hole is for the water jacket.

I have 2 numbers - the one up by the steering wheel is 112625 and the one on the side of the motor is 136230 - these numbers would seem to indicate it is a t30. However, on the side of the block by the carb - I have no oil filter - it appears the hole for the filter has been capped off. I will try to send a photo.

here is the picture again of the area where the external filter would mount - note there are no holes to mount it.
