Not ... quite ... turning over...

Hi all,
OK, so I replaced the cylinder liner gaskets on my TED20. After I put everything together, of course I tried to start it. The starter motor would just ... turn ... over ... very slowly and weakly.

I thought the battery was flat, so I replaced it with one that is charged. Same thing. I also checked fuel because there wasn't the hint of firing. The float was stuck. Fixed that, but the starter is still sluggish. I tightened all the connectors to earth and starter motor. No difference.

What do I look at next?

Stephen , I would try the starter out of the
tractor, at least this way you can eliminate it as
the cause. Blimey Gippsland is wet at the moment
isn't it .

I should have mentioned it is a new starter, and was working fine before the operation.

I'm not there at the moment, but yes it looks like it. I hope my little place isn't getting too drowned!

Can you turn the engine over by hand, either with the starting handle or via the fan belt?

Either the battery/cables/starter motor is sick or for some reason the engine is tight. You need to determine which.

Been wet in Queensland too. And cold...........

Have you lost any coolant? some may have found its
way into the cylinder/s reducing the chamber volume
and increasing potential compression to intolerable
levels.

Try something easy first, I always do. Take out all the spark plugs, if it still turns hard without compression, something you tinkered with inside is bound up. My habit is to crank the engine by hand every step of the process- so if I buggered something up, it is easy to back up and unbugger it.
Now that I think of it, when swapping starters on my 65, it was very tempermental on exactly where and how it was bolted back in- tap the button every wiggle and bolt tightening- see if that is the hang up. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I have tried to turn it by hand and it turns, but I haven't tried it with the plugs out. I will try that this weekend. If something is stuck, what could it be? Is it possible I put the piston clamps on too tight? I thought the torque required was 50. Is that right?

If there is coolant in there, removing the plugs will also allow it to turn. In fact I can flush it with the starter.

I really hope I don't have to take it all apart again! At least if I drain the oil I can re-use it!

Yes, I have tried to turn it by hand and it turns

If you can turn the engine over by hand [u:dbb9e6bf46][b:dbb9e6bf46]and it doesn't feel tight or stiff[/b:dbb9e6bf46][/u:dbb9e6bf46], my guess you have an electrical problem - battery, cables, earth or starter motor.

Try a good battery and jumper leads directly onto the starter motor.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turns out that neither of my 2 batteries had sufficient power to turn the starter properly. After I hooked up the car with jump leads it turned over more satisfactorily. It still didn't fire, but that is another story. First I need to get a new battery...
