I have read the instructions from John UK.

I have the PTO cover plate, 2 snap rings, bearing and bearing retainer removed from the tractor - finally.

The input shaft and housing can only come out 1/2" or so.

I am trying to pull the PTO shaft forward, I get about 1/2"
I can push it back maybe an 1"

How much forward do I need to move the shaft in order for the gear to drop?

John(UK) instructions say there is a difference in the PTO shaft - small and large. It says the small shaft requires the transmission to be removed to have access to a retaining ring on the shaft.

If this is a late 35, probably from '63 onwards, then the shaft has to
go backwards, in other words you have to unbolt the gearbox from
the trans housing.
John should be able to advise from your serial number.

This is a 1955 model.

I got it today. One more snap ring behind the thrust washer.

Now I am working on removing the seals from the input shaft.
I got the large one.
Not sure how the small one will come out.
