My newest project

I have posted some help request on this so I thought I would let you see what I am working on. It's a 1951 Ferguson TO20 that my duaghter wants to fix up and take to some local tractor shows. It will join my 1950 TO20.

Here it is when we picked it up. It's been driven hard and put away wet for too many years.

This is all that is left of the precleaner. The jar, tubing, and oil breather are all gone. Plus it was in the wrong place.
DSC_1518.jpg

It has the wrong type seat.

The battery tray is gone.

The steering wheel is toast.

I had to start wondering what I got myself into and I can tell you this was just the beginning.

More later.

Greetings James!
No email.
Send me one via this site.
You have something to keep you entertained.
That grill is repairable.
My short vacaction starts tomorrow. So. . .

hey james, that bugger is a real cuttie. I remember
when my girl looked like that. Can hardly wait to
see er fixed up!

THE NEXT STEP

The start of the tear down. My daughter has to help as well as my son. He didn't like it but I said it was not fair for him to get my tractor already restored and she has to work for hers. You can see the other TO20 in the back ground. It was nice to have a complete tractor there to compare to during the restoration.

It was decided to do a complete overhaul. I got a complete over haul kit from this web site. The cylinders are ready to come out.

You son and daughter will remember, the day that dad took time to be with us and work on the tractor. That memory they will have forever. Good luck with the tractor.

I lost some pictures that I can't get back but I will post what I have.

If there were things that only I could do then there was always something rusty that the kids could grind on.

Time for the steering column.

The column bearings were shot and needed replacing.

Time to check out the sector gears and guess what I found...lots of gunk.

Cleaned ready to instal new seal, seactor gears and steering arms.

Hyraulic cylinder is back on, tranny reconnected and steering column back on also. It's comming together.

As I got further in to this project I found I was taking less pictures so here are just some pictures of the general condition as I took it apart. I either did not take pictures after each section was completed or they were in the batch that got lost. My son has lost his camera and some pictures were on it.

to clean this area I found it easier to catch the fluid when it was in this postion.

This shows the condition of the gear oil, not too good.

Ok I have found my son's camera with no luck on pictures of stuff like cleaning and prepping the tires, sheet metal etc.. so I will have to jump to everything being almost back together and ready to start the engine. PURIST BEWARE!! THIS IS A GIRLS' TRACTOR. She wanted it to be total pink but her Mom and her worked out a compromise. Don't worry everything is reversible. A note on the lights, they are not the correct lights for the tractor but since this was not going to be a 100% correct paint job I went with the set that was the best buy. I can always get the correct lights. I like them though.

The lights when purchased, then cleaned and painted.

engine and radiator installed with it now back on it's wheels.
DSC_6129.jpg

you can see the pre-cleaner has been left off but the correct oil breather is installed.
This tractor had been converted to a 12v system but as you can see I switched it back to a 6v.
I like to try and get it as original as possible.

DSC_6133.jpg

ready to start. I am using an old lawn mower tank(on the ladder) until I get the engine tested and valves set for the last time.
DSC_6134.jpg

One thing I wasn't going to mention....the 5-6 month delay from nearly slicing my two fingers off with the flywheel when it and the engine fell on them. I still have both fingers but the middle finger on my right hand wont bend at the last knuckle anymore. This is what happens when you rush to save an extra $25 dollar a day engine hoist rental. So ya'll be careful now hear! It could have been worse.

The drugs are still working in this picture but I was still light headed.

Ok the last set of pictures. First a list of things done to the tractor.

Engine:
Crank was turned and new bearings, cylinders, pistons and rings. The valves were ok just reseated, new gaskets, water pump and radiator hoses, the radiator was ok just cleaned and painted.

Fuel: Tank cleaned and rust converted, carburetor replaced with overhauled original, original oil breather found and installed, new metal fuel lines and fuel shut off valve.

Steering:
Replaced front wheel bearings, spindle bearings, front and rear drag link ends, one front tire(the rest were ok for now), rear sure seals installed and new brake shoes. Rear bearings were ok just cleaned and reinstalled.

Hydraulics: new piston and rings, everything else just cleaned, honed and reinstalled. A new gasket

Dash:
New steering shaft bearings, steering wheel, chrome shaft cover and chrome nut. New ignition switch(toggle type) new gauges and new light switch.

Electrical:
New points, condenser, coil, plug and coil wires, plugs, overhauled generator and starter (6v), new starter switch and all new wiring harness(home made)

Lights:
Replaced light housings with non original and converted to 6v. New hood wings, a new light switch for rear work lamp, new rear running light and license plate holder(modified to resemble original) as well as a new wiring harness(home made) and wiring conduit.

Sheet Metal:
New grill. Hood, fenders and hood legs were all stripped, dents filled and painted. New front and side emblems. Seat replaced with correct type. The tool box under the hood as well as the battery tray were missing and originals found and installed.

Misc: Replaced oil filler, radiator and fuel caps with original type. A new engine id plate installed and hood pivot bolts put in. New radiator and fuel tank pads installed as well as the rubber dash bumpers. A new muffler put on. Countless nut and bolts either cleaned or replaced.

I know I am forgetting some stuff but you get the idea. It was a lot easier to find replacement parts for this than it was in 1997 when I restored my Dad's tractor. Thank God for the internet.

new ignition switch and ammeter

New oil pressure gauge and light switch. I know the light switch should go on the left side but since I wasn't using the red voltage light it looked like a good place to put it. It also made it easier to wire in the light whith it there.
