Redirecting TEA-20 exhaust

My 1950 TEA-20 has come very close to starting a grass fires a few times. The automotive-style exhaust out the back is just not a great idea in the tall grass. I am thinking about turning the exhaust 180 degrees from the manifold outlet, then clamping a decent (better than stock) muffler on that points straight up. Does anyone have any suggestions or cautions? I understand Australians do this all the time; in fact, its the law, I'm told. I didn't really want to change the look of this nice old tractor, but the fire hazard is just too great. Are there other alternatives I haven't thought of? Thanks, all. Paul

Just fit the up-swept/vertical exhaust, it was an optional fitting originally but quite acceptable and lots of tractors have them. But you may wish to consider an exhaust with a spark arrestor that a lot use in very dry conditions...John(UK)

John, the main concern is all that smoking hot metal nestled in the grasses; I hadn't even thought about the sparks! Paul

Don't think it is the law but probably around 90% of small tractors here have upswept exhausts for the very reason you suggest, the risk of grass fire.

You need part B1807 here:

And one of these upswept pipes:

You may also find you need an exhaust pipe stay. Careful with the height or you may get a face full of exhaust or hang the exhaust up on low branches.

A water spray pack mounted onto the slasher / brush
hog is a good idea, sometimes dry grass is stuck
under the deck and ignited by friction, the sprayer
is perhaps better than an extinguisher in that it
doesn't need replacement periodically and is easily
refilled.

You need a small diameter vertical muffler so that it doesn't foul the hood from opening. I find the vertical Sparex muffler very loud, but there is super quiet vertical muffler available in NZ.

The E0101HD muffler from AgSpares in NZ (www.agspares.co.nz) apparently fits straight onto the 52mm exhaust elbow. I can't confirm its performance, but I hope to get one on a visit to NZ in next month or so.

Yes, indeed! There is very little clearance between the hood/bonnet and muffler, so small diameter is important. some owners install a stay between the exhaust pipe and a manifold stud.

Our tractors have nearly all vertical exhausts/mufflers and you
could not burn our grass even with a flame thrower!

I would be very interested in a super quiet exhaust. I get sick of wearing earmuffs. My tractor has the second one in that photo and it is a bit noisy.Perhaps you can let us know how you get on with the NZ one.I was a bit worried about back pressure and had not done anything about a replacement. Mind you common sense would say that it is very unlikely to be made in NZ.

I hope you took this opportunity to sweep the floor that day Sam.

I don't think mufflers/silencers are so complex a kiwi tin knocker couldn't fabricate a good one, just not crank them out every second, just as orders come in I would immagine.
I would be the guy making all the rain flappers I see so few of..... and after that hydrolocked Perkins... I see a market in the vertical exhaust world...

Well I have ordered a muffler from NZ but I dont know yet what the delivery cost will be.
Will keep you informed and about how much quieter it is on installation

Well I got the muffler from NZ and put it on in minutes. It is set up as the vertical muffler. It is alot quiter than the earlier one, makes the engine very pleasant to listen to when idling over. It is straight through, you can see straight through it. It cost $135 Australian with postage.
It looks very similar to the other one but slightly longer in the muffler section. I am well pleased.
