No fuel coming through the carburettor

Me again.
This time my 1951 TED20 won't start. The first thing I checked was the carby because I had recently cleaned up all the spark plugs and I was pretty sure that side of things was working OK. Sure enough, when I open the drain screw, no fuel comes out. Not a drop. Usually even when it is blocked a small trickle comes out. There is fuel getting to the top of the carb, but not to the bottom.

So what is it likely to be? Is the float stuck? Is there a blockage within the carb? What is the best procedure to find out?

I would suspect at first glance, your float is stuck. Disconnect the fuel line to the top of the carb and make sure you have flow to the carb. If you have a brass fitting going into the carb, remove it and you might find a screen filter on the end. It also may be plugged. If the inlet screen is not blocked then I would be tempted to give the side of the carb a "rap" with a plastic handled screw driver, while the bottom plug is out.

Good advice: "I would be tempted to give the side of the carb a "rap" with a plastic handled screw driver, while the bottom plug is out."

If that doesn't work you will need to take the top off the carby and blow air through the float needle valve.

Thanks B(O) and B(A). I did try tapping on the carb but nothing happened. I will try the other suggestions this weekend.

Probably some crud caught in the screen at the fuel elbow(if it has one) or at the float valve. check the screen, and if it"s clear, pull the carb and clean it out. it doesn"t take much to restrict the flow at the float valve orifice.

I took the carburettor apart and found that the float was stuck (or more specifically the tiny button that the float pushes up was stuck). There was only a small amount of gunk in there, but apparently enough to cause a problem. I cleaned it out, put it back together again and all is back to normal.

I also learned that carburettors are not as scary as I thought.
