TEA20 PTO upgrade

blowout

New User
Hi Guys,

I'm working on my neighbours TEA20 to install a 1 3/8" PTO shaft upgrade ... and I'm having trouble extracting the old 1 1/8" PTO shaft.

I have managed to to pull the old shaft out about 6cm, it still rotates freely, but it seems as though the shaft is caught on a burr or something.

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

Thanks.

The shaft should pull straight out. If it has come 2 1/2" then it is getting hung up on the Hydraulic pump, and most likely the cam. A firm pull can be applied but too much force can break the pump brass bushings and guides.

If the PTO is twisted, it may have to cut out and removed.

If the PTO shaft won't pull out then the PTO shaft is twisted due to overload at some time. The only way to get it out is to split the tractor and cut the shaft in front of the Pump. But it is a messy job. If you need more help with this, just email me and I will send it to [email protected]

This may not apply to your tractor, but I have had a problem removing and installing shafts in the 35/50/40 Fergies and have been able to remove the two side covers and drain some of the oil and with both visibility and hand feeling have been able to maneuver the shaft and get it out and back in. My problem was always a gear between the pump and shaft and again that might not be applicable for the TEA. However, you might try draining some oil and removing the covers and see what you can see before you get too far into other solutions. Just a thought.

Wow ... thanks for the fast responses, guys!

I going to assume that the shaft is twisted ... because I don't want to wreck the hydraulic pump ... and because someone (probably by using a crowbar) has already broken 2 of the corners of the flange where the PTO shaft is bolted onto the tractor!

John (UK) ... an email is coming your way :)

Thanks

Nothing to see on the TE20 as the oil covers everything and you cant see the front end as it is straight into the PTO gearbox. When you remove the PTO shaft, engage Engine drive before you remove the side cover, that should hold the sliding gear in place while you re-fit the PTO..John

i got mine out by useing a saws all through the inspection holes, cut as close to the pump as possable and then drop pump out bottom,..worth a try if you don't want to split tractor

Hi Guys,

Thought I would just finish off this tread.

Had to split the tractor and cut the PTO shaft out.

All the sludge and filings got cleaned out (hydraulic pump removed) ... which was nice.

On the 2nd pic you can see the burrs caused by trying to pull the twisted PTO shaft out. The twist in the shaft was almost imperceptible ...

BTW Before buying the 1-3/8" PTO shaft upgrade I tried using an adapter collar to bridge the 1-1/8" PTO shaft to the 1-3/8" slasher coupling ... it lasted about 30 mins before breaking, so I don't recommend this solution.

Cheers.
