Lift cylinder leaking.. what's my next step?

Took off the right side inspection plate today, lifted up my box blade, and watched the oil pouring out of the cylinder along the rod. So I'm guessing the rings are shot?

Also believe I saw oil coming from the top of the standpipe, but looks like that o-ring gets replaced anyway when I pull the top cover.

What should my next step be? Pull the cover plate and disassemble everything to verify?

From what I read, it appears my 35 has the 2.5 inch cylinder? Is that correct? And where can I buy replacement parts. The ones I see on this site are all for the 3 incher.

Thanks for the help.

I have a TO30 with a 2.5" hydraulic cyl bore. I replaced my piston / rings with one from a NAA ford Jubilee this past weekend. I got the idea from a hydraulic repair video I bought from this site. This conversion is basically universal to all of the fords and fergusons that share the 2.5" bore dia. The video demonstrated that they could lift the front of the tractor, turn off the PTO and let the hydraulic hold pressure without the front end of the tractor drifting down. This demonstration sealed the deal for me. So I made the change! Works great and I couldn't be happier. See my thread from 3/24/10 for the part numbers.

Hi Xwild,

Like keysem, I replaced the ram piston on my TO-30 with one for the Ford NAA (with the O-ring). I touched up the cylinder with a brake cylinder hone because there was some scoring from metal shavings (from another problem). Anyway, the lift will hold a heavy implement up indefinitely with the pump off. Definitely a good upgrade.

Thanks for the info. Sounds interesting. Does anyone know if the cylinder that's in my TO-35 is the same as what was in the TO-30? I assume so, but would love to hear from someone that knows for sure.

Xwild,
Just had my pump rebuilt and the rings replaced. I guess the rings are avalable at external_link.com. Part #ABC266. $10.00 set of 3
I'll be putting it all together this week. Good luck.

Hey Xwild,
For starters, I`ll admit I`m not 1 of the True mech`s on here, But, I tried new rings for the piston on lift cyl.....Didn`t work! Still leaked & shut the key off & 3 sec. flat, impliment on the ground. Before throw`n extra money at the rings...which could go for a new lift cyl.(3", all there is to buy, well except for junk((salvage)) yards, BUT,ya might be buy`n junk).
I`d recommend you mike/measure your lift cyl., yours could be just worn out like mine is!!!....& I`m a to35 owner aslo,143xxx#.
Just thought I`d let ya know what happened to me....& I wish you good luck!!!
OH, & you can buy parts through here, I have!! Top left, tractor parts...you`ll find it.....

Thanks for the reply.. So the 3" cylinder they sell on here will bolt in without too much work? Anything else that needs replacing other than the cylinder/piston/rings?

Good to know you've got a low serial as well. Looks like all the parts for the 170xxx and up serials are a lot more readily available.

Thanks for the help all. Upgraded to the 3" cylinder. Readjusted all the linkages and it works like a charm now. Man did it take a lot of adjustment. I'm thinking someone else had already readjusted to try to make up for the leaky cylinder.
