Lest We Forget

Sorry, not tractors but terribly important to many of us.

Today is Armistice Day or Remembersance Day here in Australia - Armistice in the Great War was declared at 11.00 am on 11 November 1918 at Rethondes, France.

Today is Veterans Day in the USA.

My family served our young Australian Nation in every conflict in our short 108 year history, not so much for Queen and Country but to give all men and women, of all nations, race, creed and religion, a right to the democracy and freedom my children and I enjoy.

Miss you every day Dad - you were the best! (Royal Australian Navy 1939 - 1945)

My son, an airline Captain and Australian Army (Reserve) Officer will serve in either Timor or Afghanistan next year, not so much for an idealistic War on Terriorism, but to give a right to freedom and democracy to all men, everywhere.

Lest we forget!

In the States, Armistice Day is celebrates as Veterans Day.

How important/remembered is Gallopils, down under?

Gallipoli is a shrine to all Australians. Our ANZAC Day celebrations (April 25) always includes a dawn service at Gallipoli. Even our school kids would know about Gallipoli.

The ANZACS (Australian and New Zealand soldiers) landed at what became known as ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli, on 25 April 1915.

The Gallipoli operation cost 26,111 Australian casualties, including 8,141 deaths. Despite this terrible price, it has been said that Gallipoli was a bad decision and had no influence on the course of the war.

Australia fought the Turks at Gallipoli. Ninety four years later the Turkish army are alongside Australian troops in Afghanistan.

This year, Australia expressed special thoughts for the surviving crew members of the USN submarines [i:bc3f2168b4]Sturgeon[/i:bc3f2168b4] (MV [i:bc3f2168b4]Montevideo Maru[/i:bc3f2168b4] incident) and [i:bc3f2168b4]Sealion[/i:bc3f2168b4] (MV's [i:bc3f2168b4]Tamahoku Maru [/i:bc3f2168b4], [i:bc3f2168b4]Rakuyo Maru[/i:bc3f2168b4] and [i:bc3f2168b4]Kachidoki Maru[/i:bc3f2168b4] incidents).

And all thanks to that wannabe General
WINSTON CHURCHILL and the inept English military heirarchy.

The only true leader was Kemal Ataturk.
