I just bought this tractor and I am looking for info on using the high/ low mechanism on the right side of the gear box. The owner said it has 12 forward speeds and three reverse. I am primarily going to be using this to haul out fire wood. Any suggestion are appreciated.

adavis, google "sherman transmission" by J. Smith then scroll down there is a little bit about the Hupp. Others will be able to help you more than I can, so check back to the forum site. Richard

If the auxillary shift lever is on the right it is a Hupp trans. A 3speed has direct drive when the lever is all the way down neutral just above direct and overdrive above neutral. to get to underdrive move the lever down to neutral pull the handle out away from the transmission case, you may have to turn the steering wheel to the right to clear the steering arm then pull the lever up like you did for overdrive. The underdrive gear slows the PTO speed down so you can get 540 at near wide open throttle. Dad put one in our TO30 when it was new so he could run the combine with it. The overdrive gear got me grounded from driving it on the road when Mom snuck up behind me and clocked it at 22+ with the car when I was about 13.

You are such a rebel. Taking the tractor out as fast as you could get it to go at thirteen.

Shame shame shame...

LOL, love the memory

I didn't learn much from that. Last summer when the IHC guys were having their tractor ride from the Farm Tech days show in Waterloo Wi to their Red power show in Madison they let a neighbor with a AC WD and I with the same TO30 ,restored, follow the parade to our homes near Marshall. About 4mi. from here with the rain starting, when the squad car went from the back of the line to the next intersection I put the 30 in OD4 and followed it right past Max Armstrong and all the slow red tractors.Got home 10 minutes before they came by. Maybe thats why we haven't seen Dad's TO30 on Max's Tractor Shed. I sent it in a year ago would like to see it soon Dad will be 92 soon it was the first tractor he bought after taking over Grandpa's farm.

Well you can send the picture and the story behind it to The Ferguson Furrows it'll probally be included in the january issue if sent in soon.

E-mail me if you want details.

Thanks for the info and story. This site is great for new owners like me. What gear setting(?) would you suggest for hauling out tree length fire wood.

What gear setting? How fast do you want to bring it out? Sorry I couldn't resist. That will depend a lot on your area (conditions) you are logging out of, lots of hills or flat, many obstacles to maneuver around or open area? A lot of things to think of and when going into another area it could change everything again. Start slow then keep gearing up until you are comfortable with a gear. Richard
