TO-20 axle seal

Hello again,
I have a TO-20 that has a leaking axle seal. I have yet to pull it apart but have been shopping for replacement axle seals. I have ran across some seals called sure-seal that look to make the repair much easier. My question is have anyone tried these and have any success stories or am I better off doing it the correct way. Thanks again.

Steve, on the left column of this page scroll down to Research & Info, under that click on "Search This Site". Then when that loads in the top box type in (sure seals) then in the bottom box click and scroll down to (Ferguson Forum) then click the Search button. When that loads click on # 13 then read Vinny's explanation of how to do it. If you need more help just say so. Richard

Steve,
To answer your question, sure seals IS the correct way to fix it. TO-20's never had an inner seal and used the oil in the trans to lube the axle bearing with poor results, as you well know. They changed it on the TO-30 and used an inner and outer seal and packed the bearing in grease. Using sure seals basically does the same thing. As Richard said, there is good information in the archives on the subject.
I put them in mine and they work great. Virtually everyone that has a 20 uses them. And at 10 bucks or less for the pair, they're a heck of a deal.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I am new to this site and still learning how to use all of it's resources. I wanted to do a search before posting but did not look hard enough I guess. Thanks for showing me the way. I will read up on the seals and get them ordered tomorrow. Thanks again.

This site sells the "Sure Seal" and they are very easy to fit, you simply drop them onto the shaft and knock them into position, do grease the bearing though before you do that. When to refit the shafts, make sure to take your time to shim the shafts, remove the shims and fit the shaft, turn the shafts and they should turn in opposite directions, if they turn in same direction, add a couple of shims until the shafts will JUST turn in opposite direction, when you get them to do this, just add another .010 shim to give necessary clearance. You should also use two new gaskets, one either side of the brake back plate, the shims go next to the axle housing. Slacken off the brakes using a screwdriver and moving handle away from axle to slacken, you will feel the slotted adjuster inside. When you tighten brakes, adjust up fully and then slacken off 6 "clicks" and then test for balance to see if they work together. You should also test the independent brakes are not seized before you adjust the brakes by LIFTING each pedal, if the rod alongside the transmission bends then the independent brake pedal is sized at the inner joint on the axle end of the pedal and it needs freeing off, DO NOT use penetrating oil or any oil as the bushes will swell and stick again.
