Hi there, Just got my First TEF 1953. I seem to have an over heating problem. The radiator does have some damage but it holds water and ive just cleaned it out so that looks ok, The fan shroud seems to be missing but ive managed to locate a second hand one im picking up tommorow. The other component im worried about is the thermostat. Basically i cant find it. Im confused as to whether it should be in the Top radiator hose or somewhere else. If its supposed to be in the top hose than it doesnt have one. I can buy one quite easily but didnt want to if im looking in the wrong place. Any help greatly appreciated. Neil

Remove the top hose and then remove the elbow that fits onto the thermostat housing on the front of the head, the thermostat is under the elbow. The correct thermostat is...up to eng no. SA 17122E it should be 77deg c to 80 deg c.
after eng no. SA17123E it should be 68deg c to 73 deg c. The engine number is located just above the Generator, just below the Head on the Block..To get the hose off, detach the link rod at one end, unfasten the hose an push the top of the radiator forward gently....John

If there is no thermostat in there it will run far too cold and it will possibly carbon up the ports. Basically that engine is dirty compared to current engines and it often gave problems with carbon if it wasn't worked hard, if you did that it was great. It should not really smoke when working, if it does it needs the fuel cutting down or maybe injectors servicing, they should be set to 120 atms and they should "ping" when running....John
