Its not the cold and its not the starter or valves

I had the starter tested at the Massy shop I got it at. Also load tested the battery. The starter tested fine. Battery also tested good. A compression check was near impossible, every time I put the gauge in, the engine did not want to crank over. I pulled the valve cover and head off to look at the pistons. There was a hint of moisture on some of the pistons. I keep the electrical system on and tried to start the tractor. Sometimes I could get the pistons moving other times not. There is some play in the main pulley back and forth maybe 1/8 an inch or so. What is my next step, should I drop the oil pan and pull the pistons?

I wouldn"t pull the pistons right away but I would pull the oil pan to see if there is a bad bearing or other obvious problem. The condition of the cylinder bores (scratches, heavy ridge, etc) should tell you if the pistons/rings are OK. Were the bores oily or dry? If dry, the whole issue may be the oil pump. In that case, you can probably expect to replace all the bearings and check everything else (rings, cam lobes, etc). Just keep on wading through it.

first what state you in? have you jumped the starter from the battery right to the starter by passing the switch? and are you using the gear shift to start it or has that been by passed?.i have had some that the starter switch under the battery was burnt and would not carry enough current to turn them over. are you on 6v or 12v?

i agree did you check current going to starter with meter we posted all this before instead of giving us a real detailed report on every step you have taken so we can help you. you start a new post asking for help with same problem.

I've been rereading all of the post for your starter problem. I am wondering that if the engine will turn over without the spark plugs in that the problem is simply that you do not have a good start circuit. I have had similiar problems with my TO30. First make sure all of the battery wires are either 0 or 1 guage. Any smaller will not do with a 6 volt system. Also clean ALL of your terminals and posts. And as John (UK) said check the safety start switch. Pull it out of the tractor and make sure all of the terminals and contact points are clean. I will be suprised if this does not fix the problem.
If the tractor turns over easily enough without compression I would also think that you do not have a bearing problem.

good luck.

Yes I have bypaseed the switch, the starter cheacked out by the shop I got it from I was present when they tested it nothing is wrong with the starter or battery, I load tested the battery and also put it in another tractor. I have the head off with the pistons revealed and still have the same problem. Where do I look next.

Ohio, 6v and I have tried it by bypassing the switch. I use 1 GA cable and the ground is under one of the starter bolts

have you looked at the ring gear? pull starter and turn engine over by hand so you can see the ring gear all the way around look that it is running true.is your clutch disc in one peace? might be slipping out from under the pressure plate and hitting on the bell housing or some might be jammed under the fly wheel

I have taken the access plate off to view the ring gear all seems to be fine. I depress the clutch when trying to start the tractor.

I belive my electrical system to be top notch. And I think something is on a bind. When the engine is at a stoke that the electrical sytem alone can get the momentem going I can keep the pistons moving for a short time.

When all of this first started I did pull start the tractor and drive it back up my lane aprox 1/2 mile lane. And let the trator run for 3 hrs with pto engaged thinking it my be a cold fluid problem. But when I turned the tractor off it had the ame problems. I know that bypassed the starter but like I said I have had all of that tested. I think the force of the running engine was pushing past my binding issue. My question is where to take a look next. I don't have any problems taking the engine apart I just want to know what to look for.
