I got the tractor in the garage now, pulled it with the 4-wheeler. I can crank the engine over and over with the spark plugs out. As soon as I put one plug in, its cranks then stops and I need to mannully turn the engine past that point to get it going again. Besides with the spark plugs out there is no continues cranking. Is this a valve problem, to me it defintly seems like a intake outging air problem. I am still not wanting to take the head off seeing how the tractor ran for 3 hours when I pull started it. Any suggestions?

Sure sounds like a valve problem to me. Sorry but Off with it's head. Time to check it out.

Hi. Finally caught up .Try the single plug in a different cylinder and
if you find the engine doing the same thing I would be looking at a
load problem in the starter system. As been mentioned before I
would earth the battery to a bolt on the starter motor if not already
done.
Regards John.

I have been watching your threads and progress. I am having a similiar problem with my TO 30. I know my problem is definately the starter. As the starter will turn over the engine without plugs in and will run when out of the tractor I would find an automotive electrical shop that works on starters and generators.

I just dropped mine off the other day and will pick it up on Tuesday. The cost of a good refurbishment is a fraction of what a new one would cost.

Don't go pulling it apart until you've done some easy diagnostics! Before you pull the head, check the compression and you'll know whether you have a problem with a valve/pushrod. If you don't have a compression gauge get one. They're ~$20. Some auto parts stores will lend them out. Cmpression checks are best done warm but for your problem you can forget about that. You're looking for one very high cylinder pressure.

If the compression's OK, check the starter as I suggested before. Wedge a block of wood between the drive gear and the nose piece and using jumpers, try to turn it. If it hums and trys to turn but doesn't, the drive is good. It it turns than the drive is bad.
