Question on hydraulic lift

Have always been a Ford person, but recently bought a TO-35 with a 2-stage clutch.
Is this tractor supposed to have "live lift"? If I raise the lift lever when the clutch pedal is depressed, nothing happens. The clutch pedal has to be raised, or the gear shifter in neutral, to get the lift arms to come up. Am I missing something simple here?

Hello, looking through the archives I came across a thread from Jeff-Oh he says if the data plate has a M in the 3rd position (SGM) then it should have a 2 stage clutch from the factory if not then it would have been able to be put on any time after. So it was an option on the TO-35 not standard. Richard

Not all TO-35's had the two stage clutch. Your SN should have the letter M in the second position. As in SMG if it has the letter F then you probably do not have a 2-stage clutch.

Assuming it is indeed a two stage clutch then yes, you have both Live Power (PTO clutch is independent of transmission clutch) and live hydraulics (Hydro pump drive is independent of transmission)

Now how are you operating the clutch?

To disengage the transmission so you can shift gears but still have PTO and lift power depress the clutch pedal down to about 1" from bottom. The PTO and Pump are disengaged in the final 1" of clutch pedal travel.

If you are doing this and you do not have PTO or pump power then the clutch pedal may need to be adjusted. Following the instructions in your manual PGs 45-46-47.

If that does not do it then the clutch may need service. Check your shop manual.

Just feel the clutch pedal, if you can't feel two distinct stages when you press it down by hand then it is either incorrectly adjusted inside or it is a single stage clutch. Remove the bottom plate under the clutch and look inside through there, if you know what an ordinary clutch looks like out of a car or truck then if that is what is inside, it is a single clutch if it is much bigger and the flywheel has slots in the edge of it, then it is a Dual Clutch. But very early dual clutches didn't always have those slots...John

Thanks for the info on the 2-stage clutch. I did a little experimenting today and found that when the PTO lever is engaged the tractor has live lift capability. When the PTO is disengaged, there is no live lift.
Also, this little tractor has a LOT of power. It pulled a 6' rotary mower through waist high grass up a very steep hill, and didn't miss a beat. Sorry to say, but my 640 Ford with a Sherman step-down would not have done it so easily. (Don't let the Ford people know I said this.) And, the 2-stage clutch works very well and seems to be adjusted properly. Thanks again. 1Rikiz
