I am trying to replace my oil seal on the PTO of my 54 to20. I have removed the 4 bolts from the housing and pulled the shaft. What's next? I was wanting to check the bearing but am puzzled how to remove the shaft from the housing? I've been told that there is a snap ring, but everything looks to be concealed, only a pin with a key through the shaft. Thanks for any advice.

One other thing, go to the Galleries/Parts & Pieces on the site. Do a search for 52-TO30 PTO. There is a picture of the new and old shafts from my 30. The new shaft has a different style of seal and bearing.

Josh,

The PTO shaft should pull out after removing the 4 bolts in the flange. The book says do not force or pry, it should slide out easily. If it will not slide out it may have a twist or burr on the spline end that may require the tractor to be split. Not a big project. I had the same problem with my 52 TO30. When I got the tractor split, One rap with a hammer and the shaft slide right out. I replaced the entire shaft 1-3/8", fully assembled with bearing and seal. (availible on this site ~$120) Glad I did it!

Pojo,
I had no trouble getting the shaft out. After looking at you pics, I have the shaft like the one on the right in your picture. It is the original 1 1/8, any clue if there is a seal? I was able to pull that pin and slide the whole housing down the shaft about 3 inches. From what I can see, there is only a bearing, and when pushed back snug there is no room for a seal. Maybe I am getting somewhere. I may end up getting the conversion shaft, but then I will have to get a new ORC to keep from being pushed across the farm bush hogging.

Josh,

You might check the manufacturer's number on the seal if you carefully remove it. A good parts house should be able to cross-reference it to today's seal manufacturers.

Also, all the seals I am seeing are part #195763M1, which says for the 1 3/8 shaft. I have the original 1 1/8 shaft with a overun 1 3/8 clutch adapter.
