Does anyone know where I might pick up an alternator with a Tach drive that would work on my TO35. I saw one on ebay for that said it fit MF165, MF175, MF160; 30,50 Industrials using delco 1100821 or 1100822, 1100735. It was a 50071-EX Alternator. I don't know if it would work or not but it had the same size pully on it that my alternator currently has and the drive cable would have fit it. All I would have needed to do is put it on and compare the tach read out with the rpm from my scope. I figured if it didn't work I would just reauction it. Unfortunitly I was out bid a the last second. So I am back to square one but with at least a part number to give a try.

If you don't mind doing some adapting, the old Mazda diesel has an alternator with a rear stub shaft for driving a vacuum pump.

I converted my 1955 TO-35 to an alternator. The tach had not worked in years. I bought a new tachometer and cable like the orignal and finally found the correct tach drive from a SPAREX dealer. It was not listed on his price sheet but any Sparex dealer can get one using part number S.42905. It is called a proofmeter drive assembly. It will work with a generator or alternator that has an armature threaded for the tach drive. The alternator was hard to find. I got mine from a alternaor rebuilding shop; it is a Delco 1100928. The alternaor must be designed to take a mechanical tach drive. The internally regulated Delco 10 SI, which is very popular for 12V conversions, will not work. I had to change the voltage regulator to a 12V unit. I got an electronic on from JC Whitney. I also picked up a new 12V coil from NAPA because I didn't want to use an external ballast resistor. The tractor charges good now and the tack works perfectly. Next step is to add headlights. See the pictures below.

Very nice installation. Did you have to go with the three wires on the alternator or can you go with the single wire. Mine has a single wire alternator and it works perfectly now. If I have to go three wire with your installation will I need a different regulator? And can you send me a quick diagram of how you wired it. Sorry for all of the questions but what you have there is exactly what I want. It doesn't make sense to have that brand new tach sitting there not doing anything.

Thanks so much for your help. If you like you can e-mail me the info at eskorak(at)netzero(dot)com.

For a used generator try Mac Tractor in Colcord, OK, and ask for Johnny. I don't have the number handy, but a search on this site should turn it up.

We just put a one wire alternator(GM style) on a MF135. We got it at the MF dealer. It used the tach drive from the old generator. We also used the pulley from the old generator on the alternator. Had to do some wiring on the tractor, but it needed it anyway. Everything works much better.

You could also get an electric tachs that hooks up to the coil.

Was this alternator made specifically to except the tach drive? Also could you let me know what rotation direction the drive puts out? I might run down and see if that alternator could be used on a TO35.

Thanks,
Ed

The back of the alternator has holes for the screws holding on the tach drive housing and the back of the shaft is threaded for the tach drive gear. Just like the generator was setup. I don't remember what direction but the same as the generator. The direction is reversed in the tach drive housing on the back. Any alternator will fit any tractor, it is just how bad do you want it on there. I have put alternators on MF180D, MF3165, MH44, TO30. We had to make our own brackets. With a little work, that is well worth it, it will fit the TO35.

I had a similar problem. I found and electric Tach that would fit into the old tach hole. It fit perfectly and was only about $30. I can't remember the brand, but it is a common brand at several auto parts houses. It even mounted on the bottom perfectly through the "firewall" behind the battery. I got this one at Auto Zone, but I have seen the same tach at NAPA and PartsPlus. the only thing I don't really like is that the top end RPM is much higher than you need on a tractor.

Ed, someone may correct me on this, but it is my impression that the only option is to find a generator, either 6 or 12 volts, off a 35, and if it is a 6 volt have a shop convert it to 12 volts, and use that. You probably can get a generator for a 35 (or an F40, which would work also) from one of the boneyards. I have never heard of an alternator working correctly, and I have never heard of anyone selling any type of conversion to make an alternator properly drive the tractometer. How about it guys: anyone know anything different, I mean for sure, not hearsay? If there is another option I'd like to know also.

Hello, I'm running a TO-35 on 12 volt with the old generator. I put in a $31.00 walmart 12 volt fredom battery and side mount cables. Changed the coil to 12 v. replaced the headlamps to 12v. and adjusted the regulator to regulate at 13.9 . That was 3 years ago and it always starts and cranks fast and i seldom use the tractor.A tractor doesen't need an alternator as they don't have any accessories (A/C -Heater-wipers-etc.) The generator will keep up fine. Also the new 12v. fredom batterys takes and hold a charge a lot better, the amp gauge doesen't show a high charge rate all the time like it did on 6 v. -I'm a mechanic by trade ( 35 years)

Tach Drive Options in reply to phil(va), 01-28-2005 05:48:24
Thanks for the reply guy’s. I found a possible solution though it won’t sit well with those purists.

I have found a place for hot rodding that has tach drive adapters for those who want to keep a mechanical tach. One attaches to the crankshaft and the other to the camshaft. Both require some modification to the tractor by drilling into the shafts. I still need to do some research as far as what the ratio of the Ferguson tach is and the direction of rotation. The crankshaft option would also require a much longer cable but I know where to get a custom cable made for that. I also considered the possibility of taking one of these adapters and modify the alternator instead of the tractor. This will also have to be verified for ratio and direction of rotation. I think the alternator mod is the most promising with the adaptor. It’s sticks with the original premise of using the generator and if something goes wrong with the modification I just have to replace the alternator and haven’t drilled into the engine. The alternator tach drives on alternators such as the 50071-EX from the MF165 use gear driven adapters and it sounds like they may spin the wrong way. I am going to see if I can find one on a shelf somewhere to verify the direction of rotation of the tach coupling as well as it’s ratio.

I am going to resolve this little deficiency with the alternator conversion once and for all but I also haven’t ruled out going back to the 12v Gen either.

Here is the site address for the adaptors if your interested

The 12 volt generator on my MF-135 works fine, charges the battery reasonably fast and keeps it up so that I get 5 or 6 years battery life with intermittent use. Last summer it ran a 4.9 GPM electric sprayer pump for half a day too. It didn't charge good when I bought it, but the new regulator needed a bit of adjustment.

Value Built shows them, but there's no gear box. And on my MF-135 that gear box changes the speed and reverses the rotation direction. Spinning the shaft to the tach backwards isn't going to do much for a useful indication.
