Our tractor has a Lucas starter. Trying to have a starter rebuild place rebuild the starter. Is it possible to put a ring gear on the other side of the flywheel in order to use a delco remy starter?

What is wrong with your starter that the shop is iffy about. This site sells a rebuilt lucas for 299.95.If that shop is dragging there feet pick up your old starter and exchange it here. Why go to the bother of ring gear change for a delco for that kind of money.Scott

Scott,

Shop told me they are having difficulty locating a Bendix. I noticed that this site sells a starter new for299.95. Shop told me their charge will be $317 if they are able to rebuild it. I have been using 12 volts on my starter for 15 years. Starter was working when I removed it.

I see what you mean, this site sell starter drives but they are out.Call All States Ag Parts they might have a starter drive 1-877-530-4430.Scott

The $317 estimate translates to "we don't want to mess with it".

I would go get it, If disassembled be sure all the pieces are there, take it somewhere else or put it back together and use it as a core.

A rebuilt starter will be better than a new import.

I have NEVER worked on a TE20....

Here are pics of the 12 Volt Factory Starter (Test Engine, Carbs, Distributors)& 6 Volt factor Starter on my TEA-20s

Does your TE 20 starter look like either of these starters?

John Deere D,

My starter looks like last starter in pictures you sent. it has connection for the battery wire to starter on front of the starter. I will need to stay with the lucas starter as from your pictures no place to change the ring gears position. I read somewhere that the delco remy
starter works with the ring gear on the other side of the flywheel.
Thanks for the pictures

I replaced a Lucas starter on my brother?s TE20 just by making up a spacer between starter and flywheel housing. Same thickness as a 3/4? standard hex nut. Actually, maybe 5/8?. It was a long time ago.

A very innovative approach to solving a starter problem with a TE 20. Just notified today that the shop rebuilding my Lucas starter had found the parts to rebuild it. A Bendix was needed.

Thanks for the very interesting way to solve a starter prolem on a TE 20
