Opinion on governor weight TO20

Thank you in the forums for help identifying the broken piece.

My question is if Im missing 1 of the 4 governor weights: how detrimental is it that I replace it? Ive never taken an engine apart, Im not afraid to learn, however Im worried about breaking off something more or putting something back together wrong. Would a guy get by leaving it as is missing the one or will I have major regrets later If I dont? Currently I have it running smoother than I ever have and not sure I want to take the risk of jeopardizing that.

Thanks

Well, the big question would be, when is the next one going to break and is is going to go into the cam/crankshaft gear and cause some real
damage.

Not positive, but I think you can look up inside the cover with the pan off and see if all 4 weights are there.

If they are, it has been repaired, and can be assumed good.

If one missing it would be a good time to open it up and fix it right.

Just repaired mine with broken weights on an 87mm gas. With one missing I would think it would be like a ceiling fan with one blade missing. Not a big job but you will have to drain and pull radiator plus front crank pulley and water pump. Be sure to buy new front seal also.

Its actually running really smooth now; Best since Ive had it. I dont hear no rattling or feel unregular vibrations above where it would be mounted. That is my hesitation to even attempt to take it apart However Im not wanting bigger problems later.

with all due respect to all Ferguson contributors, I own and run a Ferguson TEA-20,MF FE 35 X and a collection of other colored Tractors.

If the governor plate is presently operating with THREE weights.....WHEN the next weight falls off and becomes Jammed between the Cam Gear and the Crank Gear...$$$$$....? When the next weight falls off and the engine revs to 5000 RPM plus..$$$$..? Your $$$$ your Tractor.

Engine blocks are becoming harder and harder to locate.

Good luck:

How well does the governor work when you use the tractor now? Does it hold the engine speed steady against varying loads? If one quarter of the weight on the governor was missing, it wouldn't be able to push back against the throttle spring as hard, so I would expect it to rev up to high without a load. If it is performing well and governor response is quick and steady, you could decide to take the gamble and assume the governor may have been replaced or repaired without retrieving the old weight from the pan. Personally, it would bother me not knowing and I would pull the front cover and see what was there but I know that some would just run it.

I went ahead and ordered the part. Even though it runs great now, every time it sputters or idles different its gonna send my heart into panic thinking well, this is it.

Thanks for advice and the diagrams cross my fingers and wish for luck when taking this apart.
