Can anyone show me the wiring diagram for a TO20. Went to tune it up last night and was certain I followed the same order. Ive looked online today and keeping seeing 2 different sets of wiring diagram. One of which is How I currently have it wired and cant get it to fire up. But I am beginning to wonder if its the other diagram I need to follow... Thanks.

On most tractor there is no such thing as a correct wiring diagram for the plug wires since most distributors are gear drive so they can be dropped in and have any one of the nipples on the cap be #1. What is important is that you have the firing order correct. So did you pull all the plug wires off the cap instead of doing them one at a time?

As for it firing up do you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire of the distributor and at all the plug wires that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more?? If you do not then the points maybe set wrong or are dirty or you have a short in the cap some place like the condenser wire

This should be right.

But as Old says, any terminal can be #1, depending on how the distributor was dropped in.

To determine, pull the #1 spark plug, hold your finger over the hole, turn the engine until you feel air pressure against you finger. Continue turning the engine until the piston is all the way up. You can reach in with a piece of wire and feel the piston come up.

Once up, look at the rotor position. Whichever cap terminal it is at will be the #1 plug wire. Note the rotor rotates counter clockwise.

Thanks for the replies. I will try these when I get the chance tomorrow. I was never really exposed to any kind of mechanical work growing up so to be honest Im not confident what im doing, but this helps to problem solve and move forward.

If you run into problem feel free to e-mail me and if it will help I can give you my number so you can talk one on one with me

I might take you up on that if you would like to provide your email address mine is [email protected].

Things came up yesterday and did not get the chance to. Planning on digging into it tomorrow evening.

My e-mail is always open on the forums. If on classic you should see a send e-mail in the bottom right of the box. If in modern click on my handle and the e-mail thing should pop up

Ok So I went back through, from the beginning and traced everything from the Distributor to wires to plugs. I have the firing order as 1 3 4 2. I pulled each wire from distributor one at a time to check and confirm there is a spark at each one. Suggestions what to do next to troubleshoot?

Thanks

I tried to Private message you but said it was disabled.

I ended up buying a new distributor. I installed it by turning the front cylinder to the top of hole on the out compression cycle. Installed the distributor. put wires back on plugs and no fire. I pulled each wire off the distributor one by one and have spark on all 4 including center from distributor. I actually repeated this entire process 3 times and still can not get it to fire.

Try taking the plug wires and move then across the center. I.E. take the #1 wire and switch it with the plug wire across the center wire and then do that with the other 2. One of 2 things should happen. It will start or you will get a backfire unless your not getting any fuel to the cylinders. You might also try pulling the air intake hose off and hold your hand over the carb intake and try to start it that way. You should both get a good suction there and your hand should get covered in gas

if I understand that correctly; Take each wire and rotate them two positions?

I did take the air intake off and tried to spray a little starting fluid in it last night. Did not make a difference. But I will try to put my hand over it and check for suction.

Guess that is another way of saying it. Either way you say it your putting the plug wires back on at 180 from where you had them.

The hand trick tells you if your getting gas and also tells you if you have a major vacuum leak or low compression

By the way if you switch over to classic view you can se how to e-mail me in the bottom right corner of each of my replies
