TO30 popping

I found a bit of side play in distributor, I didn't find a tolerance in the manual but it can't be more than a couple thousanths right? I rotated the engine around where the points were closed and found I could open the points a bit. Gotta be .010 ... Delco Remy

Not sure I understand what you saying but try this. Pull the distributor cap rotor and dust cover. Check the point gap on all 4 lobes and make sure there close to spec. If they are not close to spec good chance the distributor bushings are bad enough to cause odd problems

That's pretty loose. If there is enough play to cause the points to open while in between lobes, sounds like they may be set too wide.

Recheck the gap on top of a lobe, then try moving the shaft side to side. If there is significant change in the gap, that can be a problem. Especially if you can close the points completely.

Even with a worn distributor, enough messing with the point gap, you can get it to a "sweet spot" that it will run good enough for a test run to see if the problem improves.

What you don't want is to start throwing parts at it, or doing more than one thing at a time, not being able to say "that fixed it".
