oil filter plate gasket

Hate to ask a dense question but I have looked and looked and havent found the answer. I have a ferguson to20 and getting ready to do my first oil change this weekend. I understand the filter but the rubber (gasket) for the oil filter cover plate, does that go on dry or some kind of gasket sealer. I think I read somewhere about gasket shellac. Maybe in a shop manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love my Fergie!! Thanks alot Dave

I have never used any type of gasket stuff on any oil filter canister. You do need to be sure you get the old O-ring out or your very likely to have a leak

Thanks a lot ,yeah I have a cartridge type filter on my bike ,so familiar with them. Hopefully it will pull right out. The plate gasket was my concern. Any ?adhesive ? to keep that from leaking? Really appreciate the response. Over thinking it I?m sure. I do that a lot!! Thanks

Dave, the gasket shellac mentioned in the Manual is something like Indian Head (brand) Gasket Shellac, made by Permatex. That's an old school product, which I tried for this application, without much luck.

I ended up using a VERY thin film of black RTV to seal the cover plate-gasket-oil pan.

You may also need to replace the sealing washers on the drain plug and center bolt.

When you have it all back together, just add a small amount of oil first, to see if you have the everything sealed up. (Don't ask.) And, leave a container underneath it.

If you haven't had the cover/filter off since you've owned the tractor, you may find some interesting things - please report back.

There are several threads on this topic on the Ferguson forum, with lots of handy hints, including an illustration from the Parts Manual.

Vintage Tractors often suffer from "Previous owner syndrome", as in parts and assembly are not as per factory assembly:

thanks folks for all of the comments. I really really appreciate them. Im a tick "scared" now after seeing the drawing! Im supposedly the third owner of the fergie. The fellow I bought it from said them engine had been rebuilt and he "thought" it had about 125 hrs on it. I have no clue. Just getting ready, with the property I bought,to start using it and thought a fresh oil change would be just the ticket. It is. Parts will be here Saturday,so I will dig into it then. Already tried the pto seal replacement! Man that was an experience. As yall know the original pto shaft was 1 1/8. The seal was leaking and I watched the video's on replacing it. It all came apart great until I tried to separate the housing from the shaft. Someone had put a "collar" on the shaft and adapted and 1-3/8 shaft to it and "galled" it up in the process. Needless to say the new shaft will be here Monday!!
Once again thanks for all of the help and will let yall know how it goes. Thanks Dave

Well Im confused now fellows:) Just a tick of help and I got it! Drained the oil out of the Fergie, removed the pan,and the screen (round) cames half way down. It will go back easily but it "feels" like its up against something. Sure thats the way its suppose to be. Now here is the question,I bought a baldwin p40 filter for the tractor, the gasket for the filter is a bigger diameter than the filter? Bought it from Stiener, supposedly for the t-20. It had a wix 51107 filter in it. The gasket on the filter makes no sense as it would slide down and do nothing? Thank yall so much for replys. I really appreciate it. Thanks Dave

NO! Never use any gasket sealer on the oil filter, never. I don't think you read about a sealer in any Ferguson manual, at least not for the oil filter. Like Miner said, when you do an oil change, use a dab of clean, fresh oil and apply a film over both sides of the large rubber gasket that fits up under the lid. This ensures the rubber won't dry rot and makes the next oil change removal easy. before installing it, check the lid and the canister for any old gasket remnants. The lid won't seal correctly with any obstructions and cause leaks. Use a dab of clean oil too on the pan gaskets, but use the cork style ones there. Why did you remove the oil pan to do a simple oil change? Do you have copy of the original TO-20 Owner/Operator Manual?

Tim, regarding the oil filter cover in the bottom of the oil pan, the TO-20 owner's manual says: "To prevent leaks due to gasket stretching, firmly shellac filter cover gasket to pan or gasket cover." (That didn't work for me.)
Also, for those interested, there's a copy of the TO-20 owner's manual posted on the "other" N Board, in the "Manuals" section.
