Oil filter barrels TEA20

Hi everyone, I have a 1952 TEA20 that has a inclined type ?Y? oil
filter unit and I would like to know if the barrel goes on/off as a normal
thread i.e tighten to the left loosen to the right. I would like to know
this so I can ensure I am turning the correct way. Thanks Crossroads

I have tried to remove the barrel with a oil filter wrench and cannot remove it not sure why, would you have any recommendations. For removing the barrel, I am afraid of damaging the barrel. Thanks Crossroads
 

You don't turn the barrel Crossroads there is a long bolt that goes through the barrel and filter and screws into the filter head . Look at the very bottom , unless the bolt has been welded in to the barrel there should be a bolt head visible there . Sometimes this area leaks and instead of renewing a simple rubber seal the owner welds the bolt into place , a silly practice .
The seal inside the rim of the filter housing head makes it very difficult to turn the barrel as it is inclined to stick and weld onto the rim . Be wary of too much force , the head is only cast alloy and can be fractured if twisted .

Hi John, my unit is not bolted at the bottom the barrel is a thread type but I can’t seem to budge it not sure what else to do. Thanks
 

Hi Charles, my unit is not a bolt type but a barrel that is threaded, however it seems I can’t thread it off for whatever reaso. Looking for some advise on removing it safely. Thanks

A UK built TEA 20 will have had this type of fastening on the[u:3cd248a141] inclined filter[/u:3cd248a141] housing .

If it does not have this bolt it is possible that the housing and filter head have been changed at some point .
The bolt that goes through the top of the hosing head as shown by John Deere's photograph is normally a feature of the earlier six volt tractor vertical filter housing as is the disc topped dip stick . Perhaps these are variations peculiar to the Nth American and Canadian markets .
 
Good evening Charles in Aus.....This little Beast "TEA-20" Standard Engine, sure had a selection of different adaptions depending on the Country of destination.
I've only seen TEA-20s Made in Coventry England that were shipped to Canada......

I have a 65 w/ same. I used a filter strap wrench, you are unscrewing the barrel, think of it as a bolt. looking from the top down or mount it unscrews clockwise. mine was super tight hence the strap wrench.

As previously said, you should not try to turn the external barrel. Loosen the center nut first. You will only damage the o-ring by turning the barrel.
 
Was there any sort of a washer used between the bolt head and filter casing, mine does not appear to have one.
